Toyota Yaris vs Honda Fit!!!!
Test drove both the Fit and the Yaris.
Toyota royaly screwed up by having very few hatchback Yaris' available in the USA. While the Yaris is cheaper than the Fit, the Fit has more safety features standard, than the Yaris.
The Yaris shifter was pretty sloppy, the clutch was not so good, and very stiff and heavy in feel compared to the much lighter and easier to push clutch in the Fit.
The fit corners tighter than the Yaris, also, body roll is pretty bad in the Yaris, although not nearly as bad as it's predecessor, the Echo. But the Fit is far better in handling than the Yaris.
But the pedal configuration is too tight in the Fit, while the pedal layout is a bit better in the Yaris. The Yaris has a dead pedal, while the Fit does not.
Interior space and quality is no contest, Fit wins, hands down. The Yaris looks and feels cheap compared to the fit. Interior noise is louder in the Yaris as well, the engine is very raspy compared to the Fit, and engine noise is louder.
Ended up with a Fit Sport with MT.

I have read that the Yaris Sedan is made in Japan, and the Yaris Hatch is made in France? Is this true? I'm sure the Yaris will be a reliable car that gets good/great gas mileage. For me it was the fun factor. Every time I drive my Fit, I have fun.
As a longtime Toyota fan, I have wanted to drive a Yaris, and I got the chance to do so tonite.
4 door sedan with automatic. The centre gauges did not bother me too much actually. The thing is VERY Toyota in fit and feel. Not as "classy" as the Honda, but durable and quality materials.
I am 6'1" and I do not fit in the back of the Yaris that well (head hits roof/window).
Car is boomy, like the Fit, the motor sits with the exhaust manifold at the firewall, but the car is MUCH louder and "wooden" sounding, and maybe this is made worse with the automatic? Dunno.
The automatic shifted well, but not for sporting (even tho this was an S spec car?) driving.
All in all, I like my Fit better, but then automatic and sedan were not what interested me. A shame that the 5 door car is sold in Canada but not here. I have only seen one three door hatch, and it was driving. Maybe driving one of these would be better? Dunno.
As for the Yaris hatch being built in France, check the VIN, if it starts V or VF then yes, but the only French Toyota tie I know is the joint PSA (Peugeot-Citroen) Toyota plant that is being built in Eastern Europe, part of the PSA-Toyota partnership a few years back:

And the new Nissan Versa is a rehash of Renault Clio bits since Renault pays the bills for Nissan now, as if this were not evident in the current Nissan car and SUV styling!

I've seen two Fit around Portland so far (both silver) but no Yaris, LB or sedan.
My wife and I test drove the Yaris sedan and Honda Fit (base model) on the same day. The Yaris looks a little better, but felt much smaller inside. The agressive look it has (more than the Fit, anyway) comes from the roof curving down in the back and the front, which is where much of the headroom and window size is lost. We felt claustrophobic in the back and front seats, and didn't like how small the front and back windshelds were. It was very comfortable to drive, but both my wife and I disliked the way the steering wheel and plastics felt. The trunk had a nice amount of space. I wish the sedan offered as many storage spots as the LB, which has 3 glove compartments!. The car had plenty of pep with three of us on the test drive. Again, all of this is just our opinions. After all our research, we had narrowed it down to the Fit and Yaris, so they're both great cars. :)
I think the Fit looks better in person than in pictures, but still looks like a mini-minivan as many have pointed out. I still like the look though, and the Sport trim helps the look (as will tinting). My wife isn't the biggest fan, but it's going to be my car so too bad ;-) The Fit had as much pep as the Yaris, and we absolutely loved how large the windows were, which helped the visibility and gave us a feeling of open space. I think we had at least 6 inches between our head and the ceiling, and we're both 5'8". I forget if the Yaris sedan offers this, but the reclining back seats made the rear quite comfortable. I love the finish inside, and the engine was plenty smooth/powerful for my needs.
So in the end, we put a deposit down for a Fit Sport in either blue or silver (which ever gets there first). If the Fit wasn't around, we probably would have picked the Yaris (or an xB). Both are great, and I hope everyone has fun with what they pick! :D

Don't get me wrong -- I love the Fit, Yaris, and xA/xB but saying Toyotas aren't driver's cars is rediculous.
And lastly, I wish people would stop comparing the Fit and Yaris. If you want to compare apples to apples, compare the Fit and the xA.
Dito the thoughts on the yaris center dash layout. Can anyone say cost-cutting? Otherwise I really like the look of the yaris. It's the interior flexibility that sold me on the fit. The gas mileage is dissapointing, I mean there are a lot of much heavier cars getting decent gas mileage in the mid 30's and my mother-in-law's Park Ave' Ultra gets 30MPG hwy, why shouldn't we have expected honda to deliver a car that at least averages 40? The exterior is okay, but nothing exciting. I keep thinking it looks like a ford focus hatch from a distance since I pass one daily on the way to work.

The 06 Honda Civic Si is way more of a driver's car than either of those two.
Generally, Honda's are more of "driver's car" when compared to Toyotas. That's an opinion that is usually reverberated through the automotive press; it's also something I agree with as well.

I agree 100%. Toyotas, while certainly fine cars, tend to be more "appliance-like" than Hondas. A Camry is almost over-insulated in its feedback to the driver (not a bad thing for many people). The Accord on the other hand trasmits more data back to the driver what the tires are doing, what the road surface is like, and suspension tends to be tuned more towards the sporting edge vs compliance.
I havent driven the Yaris but it wouldnt surprise me if it was similar. I will say the center gauge pod on it and Scions twins is absolutely ridiculous, I absolutely hate it.

Toyota is gonna turn into buick if they keep it up

An apples to apples (with exact same options, remember, you have to add SRS side air bags, alloy wheels, spoiler, fog lights, etc. for the xA, it all comes standard with the Fit Sport) Scion xA to Fit results in the xA being $200 more expensive than the Fit Sport.
After that, then consider the extra room and utility of the Fit, not to mention the exterior styling.
