Toyota woes

They just don't seem to be ending. Now 2010 Toyota Prius owners are having problems with their brakes!!!:

At least 33 complaints alleging safety problems with the '10 Prius, most often involving braking issues have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation.

added to their old woes:

The most significant came in October, when the automaker announced it would need to recall 3.8 million vehicles because floor mats could become tangled in their gas pedals, potentially leading to runaway acceleration. The announcement followed a widely reported incident in August, when an off-duty California Highway Patrol officer and three members of his family were killed in the fiery crash of a Lexus sedan that hit speeds of more than 100 mph after the gas pedal jammed.

There have been other problems, including the recall of 110,000 Tundra pickups that federal investigators found were prone to excessive corrosion that could lead to brake failure and even having spare tires snap off while driving. Meanwhile, NHTSA is investigating claims that 2006 Corolla and Matrix models might unexpectedly stall out, sometimes at highway speeds.

And Toyota, rather than fixing or really looking into it, instead counters with a marketing campaign. Sounds like the old GM. Don't fix what was wrong or recall anything, just keep making them and advertising them.

What do you think? Toyota heading down the path to low-quality vehicles? Shrugging off responsibility? Do you worry about the quality of cars overall?

Dang...that is major suckage. Yeah, it seems like Toyota is letting it slip. Oh well, let Honda rise!

There are limits to how far one can go with lean engineering, and Toyota may have exceeded them, exacerbated by a desire to become #1 in sales on the planet. Their new president says he intends to turn things around, but that takes time with an enterprise as big as an automobile company. Evolving Excellence: Toyoda's Expected Apology.

I owned nothing but Hondas 1970-1989, but when I looked to replace my 1982 Accord, the Hondas of that era felt cheap and looked like corners had been cut. The Fit brought me back. Companies go through ups and downs, and the good ones learn from their mistakes.

Toyota might be slipping but they're still head and shoulders above the American brands. I'm thinking their new FT 86 is going to go a long way in helping their image.
