Elio Motors has revealed plans to start selling their three-wheeler, two-seater from June 2014 for a 6,800 USD base price. 13,000 units already reserved.
Designed mostly for first-time buyers and those on a very limited budget, the Elio will be able to return an estimated 49 mpg US (58.8 mpg UK or 4.8 liters / 100 km) in the city and 84 mpg US (100 mpg UK or 2.8 liters / 100 km) on the highway.
Paul Elio, company founder and CEO, says the vehicle will tip the scales at less than 800 lbs (363 kg) and will probably be powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.0-liter gasoline engine linked to a 5-speed automatic gearbox sending power to front wheels. 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) will take less than 9.6 seconds, onto a top speed of more than 100 mph (161 km/h).
Since it has less than four wheels, the vehicle can be registered as a motorcycle, but according to Elio in most states owners won't need a motorcycle license to use the vehicle. He also says it meets all safety requirements applicable to a four-wheeler.
In terms of size, the vehicle is 161 inches long and has a 110-inch wheelbase. It comes with a fold-down back seat to provide cargo space enough for a set of golf clubs or something of similar size.
