Auto Insurance Questions

Well, I got married recently, and my wife has her learner's permit and hopefully soon her license. I've been under my mother's insurance 21st Century forever and I asked her to give them a call and get a quote of how much the insurance will go up once she gets her license. We live in NJ so most of you will balk at the expensive rates we have here. At this time, full coverage for my Fit and liability on my 2000 Accord, costs me around $1300/yr. When my wife gets her license they said that the same coverage for both vehicles will go up to about $4000/yr. Just the Accord alone will be $1800/yr! Not to mention all the other cars in her plan will also go up.

Anyways it looks like its time for us to split up from her plan and go on our own way. I have done some online guesstimating quotes to get a ballpark figure of how much it will cost for coverage by myself and when she gets her license. Geico and Esurance gives me about the same price around $1600-1800/yr. I understand that my rate will go up, however I don't get why 21st Century will do a 100% rate hike!

So this is my first time shopping for auto insurance. I need help. What insurance companies to avoid. What insurance gives the best bang for the buck?

Should i bother getting the PIP Medical/Health insurance? I have health coverage at work and i think auto accidents are covered.

In the past 15+ years I've only dealt with 2 companies...
Long story short, I had Geico for many years till they jacked up my rates (I had no accidents, tickets, or anything), went with Allstate since they initially offered better rates. They jacked up my rates 2 times, so I decided to call all of the insurance companies I could find and get rates. All were higher, and the esurance rep suggested I try Geico (I didn't want to after so many years of being with them) but was curious about the rates. They even transferred my call to Geico. Geico found that I was a long time customer, and I told them why I left, apparently I wasn't the only one... and their new rates were even better than before (they told me some bs about wanting to get their old customers back) so I went back . One thing I used to like since I had so many used cars way back when, is that they pay for towing if your car craps out.

For me Geico was the least expensive one, but I'd definitely recommend calling every company you can find for rates and see which was cheaper. It's still way more than other parts of the country pay, by a lot.

Definitely get rates with and without your wife, but generally I'd think it would be cheaper to be combined. There's also certain tricks that are on the net to get a slightly lower rate, but I'm not too familiar with that.
