Brake System Light and Front Camera Failure
Brake System Light and Front Camera Failure
A friend of mine purchased a used 2018 Fit about two years ago. They brought it into a Honda dealership for a needed servicing. The front-facing camera is broken, which is a pricey fix, around $2400 all told. While they will eventually get that fixed, it is not in the cards at present. Probably five or six months out.
My question is about the brake system light on the dash. I don't know this for sure, but the brake system light came on recently, while the camera has been dead for 20+ months. They had the brake fluid replaced, transmission oil changed, new tires put on, rotors re-machined, and a thorough check over .
The dealership claims that the brake system light is on because the camera is dead. This is causing a cascading series of warnings. They also claim that they cannot confirm that the brake system is properly functioning without replacing the camera. I suppose this is plausible because the brake system is tied into the camera. My understanding that almost all of that has to do with automated collision avoidance stuff.
Does this seem correct? Is that brake system light potentially caused by the faulty camera? Again, they will probably replace the camera, but having just paid a lot for servicing, they need some time to replenish their funds. Thanks in advance for any insights.

Same issue
I’m having the same issue, all three — LKAS, Collision alert and brake system failure. Took this to my trusted non Honda mechanic who did diagnostics and ruled out everything except the camera. The problem is that if you replace the camera it has to be realigned and programmed by Honda. So they recommended take to Honda. After horrible experiences at Honda, I’m thinking of just dealing with it until I can’t stand it anymore. It’s still intermittent for me. Some days it comes on and some days it doesn’t. Honda will quote you about $1k just for the camera not including anything else like installation labor alignment etc. I found it online for $600 but am doubtful Honda would install it if I brought that in. I feel like this should be a recall. It’s a safety issue and if only Honda can fix it and they know it’s a problem, it should be recalled. Best of luck
I'm dealing with the same issue on my 2019 Fit. I had it diagnosed, and the cost for repair and recalibration is estimated between $1800 and $2400. It seems like more of these systems are failing lately. I reached out to Honda hoping they'd cover it as a goodwill gesture, but they were no help at all.
I plan to get it fixed, but I'll be filing complaints through every available channel. I suspect this will become a bigger problem as more vehicles experience the same failure.
To address your question, the brake system is probably fine, but the fact that it completely disables cruise control while bombarding you with errors, loud warnings, and annoying messages is unacceptable. It feels like planned obsolescence to me—$2000 per repair across however many Fits they sold.

Hey! What you’re describing makes a lot of sense. In many modern cars, including the Honda Fit, safety systems like automatic braking are tied to the camera. If the camera is broken, it can trigger errors in the system and turn on the brake light.Additionally, it’s good to know that some functions might be disabled when the system isn’t working correctly. So replacing the camera seems necessary to ensure everything operates as it should. It’s great they plan to fix it, but I understand it’s costly. Fingers crossed for a quick resolution!
Yeah this is total crap. I've got the same Honda Sensing problem and no way in hell those idiots at the dealership are getting my money. There's a workaround somewhere. Just gotta find it...
They were supposed to do the warranty valve cleaning but 9-miles after the supposed cleaning, when I replaced the injectors, the valves were still gummed up. They didn't do s**t. But they did manage to hit me for the diagnostic fee even though it was warranty work. The dash lit up after the "cleaning" so they took it upon themselves to diagnose a problem I already knew about (injectors). I took pics but never got around to contacting Honda USA about it. Love the cars, hate the scum sucking dealers...

Honda put faulty cameras in our cars. Someone needs to create a class action lawsuit. File complaints with NTSHA, BBB, CarComplaints.com.
Here is a template:
Component/System Involved:
The multi-purpose camera system on my [Year, Make, Model] has malfunctioned, disabling critical safety features such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Lane Keep Assist System (LKAS), and Collision Braking Warning System (CBWS).
Safety Risk:
The failure of these systems creates significant safety risks. Without ACC, the vehicle cannot maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. The LKAS no longer provides steering assistance to help stay in the lane, and the CBWS cannot detect or warn of potential collisions. These malfunctions increase the likelihood of accidents, especially during highway driving or in heavy traffic.
Problem Reproduction and Confirmation:
The issue has been reproduced and confirmed by [Dealer/Service Center Name] during an inspection on [Date].
Inspection Details:
The vehicle has been inspected by a dealer/service center, which diagnosed the problem. However, the manufacturer has not offered a resolution, nor has the vehicle been inspected by police, insurance representatives, or other parties.
Warning Indicators:
Before the failure, warning messages appeared on the dashboard, including alerts for ACC, LKAS, and CBWS system malfunctions. These warnings initially appeared on [Date/Timeframe] and became more frequent over time.
I believe this issue may be a design or manufacturing defect affecting other vehicles of the same make and model. I urge the NHTSA to investigate this matter to determine if it represents a broader safety concern.
