Hey guys, my 19-year-old son had his first accident a few hours ago...he rear-ended someone...really effed up his car...it's a '95 Camry that wasn't in bad shape, but has 120K on the odo...now what the hell do we do? We don't want to buy him a new car but fixing this one is going to be expensive...hood is totaled, bumper may be gone, headlight smashed...

Thank God no one was hurt but it sucks that he had an accident, he's such a good driver normally. His dad was talking at the time...I told him to SHUT UP when he's in the car...

Glad you did well, and I hope you get a perfect score, is that 2100 on the SAT? 1900 would be really good.

Id say go with trying to find an older used car in good condition

A perfect score is now 2400 due to the addition of the writing section

My kid had trashed 2 motorcycles, a VW diesel pickup, a MGB, VW Karman Cabriolet and took down a telephone pole in an 82 Accord before he reached 20... I forgot to mention the Jet Ski and golf cart.

Somehow, Coyote, I'm not that surprised! we've got one of those kids too, he's 16 and hasn't even taken lessons yet b/c I am terrified to put him behind a wheel, not only for his own sake but that of everyone else.

Your insurance bill must have been insane.

So tell me what you'd do:

If we report the accident to the insurance, son's rates will definitely go up. That's guaranteed, but we don't know how much they will go up. We will be covered in case the other driver suddenly finds she has whiplash or her repair bill hits $3000 (yes, I am suspicious because people do this crap nowdays). I think we are supposed to report it anyway, not sure about the law. We might even be supposed to call the police to report it, which I'm sure a lot of people do not do.

If we don''t report, then we will be responsible for the other driver's damage (hopefully minimal) as well as the repair or replacement of the Camry. That's a lot of money that we don't need to spend right now.

Advice please? The car itself is worth at most $4,000. The entire hood has to be replaced, the bumper probably needs replacing, one light is completely shattered and the other may be damaged. (He hit a Rav4, not sure if it had a trailer hitch or not.) No radiator damage thank God, but the frame is bent in so that it contacts the radiator. The airbags didn't go off.

And that's another thing: This is a 15 year old car and although it was state of the art then, cars may be safer now. I won't put him into a Fit, but he could drive a larger car or SUV and maybe be safer.

Feedback plz. THanks.

^Sounds like you'd be better off reporting it to insurance. I think if damages were <1000 you could start talking about paying out of pocket, in most cases. Did he have full coverage on the camry, or just liability?

I have to check this morning, I can't remember if it's full coverage. I opened the hood and the frame of the car right in front of the radiator is bent so it's in contact with the radiator - not actually puncturing it but in contact. so the radiator may have to be replaced too.

He's still under our insurance, not his own.

You're screwed, you can't report it to anything iirc once you've left the scene of the accident it's considered a hit and run
