No, it was a fender bender and the damage was not severe to the other car - if you have under a certain $$ amount, you are supposed to clear the scene, take the information and then report it later.

If there are injuries or a lot of damage, to where the cars aren't driveable, then you have to call the police, even if you are going to get a ticket.

In this case, he would have gotten a ticket if they'd called the cops. The lady he hit was very laid-back about it, according to my husband. And her damage was not bad, just her bumper scraped up and the cover will definitely need a replacement. Not sure yet about the bumper itself.

I just called the insurance agency and we have full coverage for it, with a $500 deductible. Even if they raise his rates for the accident, I can't see how we'd save any money or hassle trying to cover this on our own. I think the best plan is to go ahead and file a claim, but still not sure if we should file a report at the P.D. - can they still issue him a ticket retroactively?

same thing happened to me. driving a work truck with a big ladder on the back couldnt see the truck behind, demolished the bed of it. called my boss and they said they knew him and to come back and we'll give him a call about what happened. apparently the neighbor saw and called the cops. Almost was arrested at my job for hit and run, but my boss got it all settled thank god.

The insurance company that covers me was all hot and bothered about me not calling them when I hit a tire tread chunked off of a tractor trailer rig on the interstate and pulled off all of the plastic crap from the bumper back but left the side skirts and rear lip unharmed..... They were freaked out that I don't have a cell phone....2 grand in damage in October 06...... I just received a $103.99 windfall from the insurance company of the kid that took out all of the mailboxes where our private road intersects the county road...... He rolled and did an endo landing bottom side up in his Rota equipped ricer while speeding and using his cell phone at the same time..... My neighbor took a picture of him crawling out of the window still talking on his cell phone... He was on his way to school.
