If you can't disengage the trans (as in depress the clutch) to increase engine revs in downshifting, "rev matching" is not applicable with an auto trans. If you are turning 4000 rpm in 3rd and intend to downshift, hitting the gas pedal just increases your revs and speed in 3rd gear. It makes no difference what you do with rpm during a downshift, because you are always in gear.
