Unhappy Elusive engine miss

We've owned our 2008 Fit Sport since 2010, other than one issue, an amazing, well loved car. Now has 170k. For many years it's had an intermittant engine miss/stumble most noticeably when at stop light. Of course it never occurs when taken to our long-time independent shop. As a last resort, I took it to dealer with same result (although they said it needs $3,000 worth of work but wouldn't guarantee the problem would be fixed). Of late it's also noticeable at speed, when on freeway. When at stop light, if I slip into neutral, it goes away. This makes me wonder if it's a transmission problem. From forum I've read about 1st gen cars having ignition coil problems and suppose I should start by replacing coils but would appreciate others thoughts first ... Thanks!

Plugs were changed at 125k and current mileage is actually 175k. Plugs were recently checked and okayed by my mechanic in searching for problem. I'll start with coils ... Thanks

So, I've just done this to my car. I ordered four Densos, and four Denso plugs. I was chasing a similar miss, when I pulled the coils they came apart (normal) but when I got to inspecting, I noticed each of the resistors inside of the coil packs were burned in some way. The miss was isolated to Cyl 3, Behold - a completely burned resistor. All is well now.

That's the direction I've been leaning, I'll do that soon and post results. Thanks for your thoughts!

Elusive engine miss

I was having a very similar problem with my ‘07 at roughly the same mileage as yours. It did not always set off the check engine light however so there was no code to look for. I ordered all new Denso coils and plugs online from Rock Auto and car has been smooth with no issues for past year or so and about 25k miles.

When was the last valve adjustment? They are due every 60k miles on the GD Fit. If not done, they will eat plugs and coils. If neglected for long enough, new plugs and coils will still not fix the issue and it will start to eat the exhaust seats.

Good thought as last valve adjustment was at 120k. After I replace plugs/coils and hopefully have a smooth running Fit again, at next service that will be done.

On a completely unrelated matter how does one replace light bulb LOL for transmission indicator on console? I searched forum and could only find same question from 2015 but no answer.

Engine miss and transmission light bulb

Replaced plugs/coils and now a have a smooth running Fit once again, thanks Knope and ALL for your diagnosis!

Now it's only that light bulb for the transmission indicator on console - how to access?

Here's what I recall (see this figure):
  • Remove shifter handle (two screws at front for CVT)
  • Remove small cover at front of handbrake
  • Remove two screws at rear of centre console (access from back seats)
  • Push in and remove two clips at front of console
  • Lift and tilt console from the rear (note that there's a snug-fitting clip in the middle)
  • Remove electrical connectors at the front and move the console away
  • Locate black (and red?) wiring going to shifter base and feel for the lamp holder
  • Turn lamp holder 1/4 turn to remove
  • Check that the bulb is indeed blown (i.e. it's not a blown fuse or a loose connection)
  • Replace bulb (perhaps with a suitable LED)
  • Test that it works before reassembling
Hope this helps!
