2007 GD3 L15A Engine Noise
Hi All,
Recently purchased this car about a month ago, has had a full service history without any missed oil changes and seems to have been really well cared for, one owner vehicle, old owner.
Car currently has 190kms, which is around 120,000 miles. It does not burn or consume even a drop of oil.
I do not know if it has had its valves adjusted yet, but does this sound like normal L15A noise? It seems like piston slap, I will most likely drain the oil and run something thicker (such as a 10w-40) to minimise.
When the engine is warmed up, there is almost a rattle/knock sound coming from the lower engine area.
Video here:
Thanks

People are telling me to get my valves adjusted. Your noise sounds the same as mine. I will get them adjusted this week and report back.

Why do you think that sounds off? These are noisy little sewing-machine engines. Would be curious to hear what others think - I'm no mechanic but it doesn't sound bad to my ear (source: having owned my GD for 17 years and over 130k miles). Also yours sounds way different (better) than the one that you linked above.
Engine sounds completely normal to me. The slight knocking/rattling that's out of sync with the engine sounds like something external, e.g. a slightly loose heat shield. You might try holding a screw driver against the heat shield on the exhaust manifold while it's running (be careful) and see if you feel a vibration. Try to regas the AC. I found a YouTube video sound like yours. The noise diminished after he regas the AC.
My 2007 GD3 is now 256,584km having the same noise, I will try to get a regas next month. Let me know if you fixed it.
