Can anyone recommend the best way to tie down the hatchback?

I've got a 2007 Fit which I sometimes use to haul lumber. Since the lumber sticks out the back a bit and I don't want to drive with the door wide open, I'd like to tie the door down.

I can find plenty of places to hook the bungee or affix a rope inside the Fit, but the door itself doesn't seem to have any useful bits to clip onto or thread through. I'm pretty sure that if I keep doing what I have been doing, I'm going to break something.

Any help?

I looked on my 2010 and there's nothing inside the hatch to have a tie-down grab onto. You could put a strap all the way around the entire hatch and pull it closed that way. A rope's not a good idea- more likely to scratch the paint. And if there's a buckle, make sure it's inside, not against the paint.

Not a good idea to drive with the hatch open and unencumbered- for one thing if you hit a big bump it'll bounce, putting pressure on the hinges. Also it's recommended that if you do drive with the hatch open that you leave windows open too, otherwise the low-pressure behind the car sucks exhaust fumes into the car.

 

If you have the right size metal ring, you can mimic the latch hook on the Fit.

Take the ring, shove into the latch on the bottom of the door. and tie that down. Then, when you're done, pull the handle while pulling the ring out (as if you were simply opening the hatch).

 

Remove the hatch plastic interior and use the frame for the bungie chords.
