Sticky Thermostat
Sticky Thermostat
My hot engine light was coming on a lot. The dealership said it was a sticking thermostat. I want to know if it is possible just to remove the thermostat completely and have the coolant directly connected to the radiator? If not, it there a way to ensure the thermostat stays open? Like punching a hole in it or something? I could probably replace it, but I'd rather not if I can help it.
A thermostat that is always open will not allow the engine to get to full operating temperature. This can cause all kinds of problems both in the fuel system (running rich all the time - so it eventually fouls spark plugs and plugs the catalytic converter) and with engine hard parts (pistons start out NOT round with excessive clearance on the major and minor thrust sides and as the temperature reaches normal levels, they become round and clearances close up to what they should be)
Just change the thermostat.
Just change the thermostat.
