Getting ready for record low temperatures

Ugh! So ready for spring. Our area is under a winter advisory and extreme wind chill advisory starting tonight and until Tuesday. They are saying it could get negative 30 below wind chills. I am really worried about my 2007 Fit outside on the employee lot all day in that much cold air. I checked all my fluids and everything is in good shape. Have nearly a full tank of gas. Any other Fit Freaks who live where it gets this extremely cold have any other suggestions??? Thanks!

The Fit (like any car) doesn't care about wind chills, only the actual temperature. I've never head any trouble with similar cold with any modern car, the Fit included, and it's been known to get down in the teens or twenties below zero around me from time to time.

Assuming you have a decent battery, you should have no real problem starting your car. You may have to crank it a bit longer than usual, and maybe even give it a bit of gas when starting it. Still, it should catch pretty easily; such is the magic of fuel injected engines. Don't be surprised at rough running at first when the engine is really cold.

You would, of course, be well served to take things easy until the car warms up; it's not necessary to let it idle for a long time to warm up (although several seconds can help), but you should drive gently for a few minutes, and expect rather slow shifting at first.

The most important thing is synthetic oil, I use Mobil1 or Royal Purple 0W-20 in winter. Next is Iridium plugs, which are OEM on the Fit. Although Honda specs either NGK or Denso, I prefer Denso as they require even less juice than the NGK's to produce a good spark. I had a good tune-up and new battery a couple winters ago and here in Interior Alaska I left my car outside for 3 hours without being plugged in at -50F. actual. It started, first on two cylinders and after a little drive I shut it off and restarted and it ran on 3, then shut it off and restarted and it fired on all four. The steering was REALLY heavy. And I got a check engine light. The code turned out to be "evaporative emissions system operating at less than full efficiency." No kidding! I D/C the battery for a half hour and it cleared the code and it didn't come back. The most important thing is 0W-20 synthetic in winter. It gets the lubrication where it belongs in the least amount of time.
