Turns out my hicupping or hesitation came from the EGR valve sticking. Is this an easy repair for an amateur or best to leave it to the pros?

Well I would at least try to clean it. It takes two seconds to undo the little wiring clip and take out the two bolts holding it in. Just spray some brake parts cleaner in there and try to degunk it.

If that doesn't work then you'll have waisted 15 minutes and you'll just have to bite the bullet and buy another

How did you find out that it is EGR ??
You found this with scanner? your classmate suggested that??

 

Hesitation and hiccuping. Lag in acceleration, misfire, lack of power, ???

Do you have any codes?

And like doctor J said, how are you sure it's the EGR?

 

FYI, the "third party" generic scanner may indicate EGR error 99.2% with engine on or off and car is not moving. This error can be disregarded if it changes to 0 if the car is in motion. I found this after driving home with scanner attached.
