Strange cracking sound when steering.

Hi, I've been hearing and feeling cracking noise, coming from my left wheel (driver side), whenever I steer, it gets more noticeable when steer the wheel all the way to either right or left side. The sound disappears when I get some speed, and it cracks again if I brake or pass through bumps.

I replaced both sway bar links recently, my friend who's an auto mechanic, suspects the sound comes from the CV joint, has anybody had a similar issue?
If that's the case, how safe is it to drive the car? Since I'll have to order that piece abroad, because it's not available in my country right now. Besides, commuting here is pretty difficult sometimes.

My friends 2007 fit has just developed a creaking noise at low speed
While turning. It's also on the drivers side. I suspect it's a strut.
