Salvaging the brackets on the rear hatch struts

Hello all,

I'm wondering if there's a way to easily salvage the brackets on the rear hatch struts?

Looks like these are the original struts and they don't have the nice little clip the new struts have. I'm not sure if they will separate with some good old fashion muscle or they aren't made to be taken apart? I was thinking of using my Dremel and cut the strut off of the brackets.

Who has the lowdown on these brackets? People just replace them with new ones?
