Towing a small trainer with 08 Fit

Ok, not for me, But I have a friend who's currently been looking at getting a small utility trailer for her 2008 fit for getting small loads of dirt, taking things to get fixed like lawnmowers, and other small items. I have seen other people here tow small trailers with their, could it be possible with her's? She has the 2008 Fit with a 1.5L engine, and automatic transmission. What would she need to get? I think a trasmission cooler, and some electrical done for lights on the trailer. Anything else?

She was thinking about getting something like this
Stirling Galvanized Box Trailer, 4 x 7-ft | Canadian Tire

That tongue weight is probably a bit on the heavy side, if not too much, for her Fit. Not to say that it could not tow it. As long as the roads are relatively flat, she should be okay. I would also be concerned with the ride height once the trailer is attached to the hitch. The tongue weight on the hitch will cause the rear suspension to drop, causing the headlights to point higher up. And with less weight on the front of the car, the drive-wheels would have less traction. I know for my Odyssey there are air bags to help mitigate the sag - I would guess that a similar product is available for the Fit.

The payload capacity of the trailer shows 1580 lbs with a tongue weight of 200 lbs. I believe the payload capacity of the Honda Fit is about 800 lbs (no driver, no fluids, etc etc). It may even be less. Curb weight of the Fit is about 2544 lbs. I think she would have hard time controlling that trailer with the Fit especially if it started to sway. I think I would borrow a friend's truck if I were her. Although people have towed things with the Fit, it isn't a safe thing to do as these cars were not built to tow. If she plans on keeping her Fit for a long time, then she should save money for all the things that will fall apart sooner due to towing. Just my $0.02.

I've used my wife's 2008 Fit Sport for light towing duties, though that car has the 5 speed manual which is probably preferable for towing. I purchased a hitch and wiring harness from eTrailer.com, and I have a trailer I bought from Harbor Freight. I did the hitch install and trailer assembly myself, no welding required.

It tows perfectly fine, so long as you are very careful about how much weight you have.

The hitch is rated for a 200lb tongue weight, and the axle on the trailer for 1200lbs I think. I've never put more than around 300 lbs in the trailer though.

Yeah, that trailer was only a guess. But there's gotta be some sort of small trailer that she could tow. I might check out a small trailer shop, see what they have in stock.

Hey Terdog,

I carried a load in my car late last year and had a carrying weight of over a 1,000 pounds. That was including me. I really didn't have any problems. Not even climbing the Grapevine. I was going from Long Beach to Sacramento. I also had access to an accurate scale too.

If I was looking at a trailer for my Fit, I'd look at Harbor Freight. I'd go through the trailer and make sure the bearing are lubed well. Maybe find some buyers that have bought one already. The trailer you pointed out is a bit overkill.

Thanks for the assistance gang. We talked last night, and i think she's going to look for a small cheap truck. Something like an old Dodge or similar.

Terdog, excellent choice. I may have forgotten to mention the legalities if she were to get into an accident and the police find the vehicle was overloaded.

wiring harness connector location

Hey that's an interesting thread. I was wondering if someone can help me with the location of the wiring harness connector in a 07 fit. Where I plug the wiring harness? I looked everywhere...

Thanks alot

I'm not sure what you mean Fred. My wiring connected to the break and turn signal lights. If I remember correctly, the wiring had a plug that adapted the existing connectors to the lights and allowed me to wire the car for towing.

I used a kit from eTrailer. This video shows how it attaches to the car -

i ordered just the hitch and wiring harness. I haven’t a trailer yet and I have a 2” hitch already that I could get an adapter for so I figure I should wait til I find a trailer for more stuff. Do you think there some essentials I’ll need in addition to the hitch and wiring at this point?

C45014 Curt Class II Drawbar - 5” Rise

This was one of the things I bought because I couldn’t get it locally.

The hitch is really close to the ground so for almost every trailer a straight draw bar would put the tongue of the trailer really low.

This is the largest rise I could find in a 1 1/4 and I didn’t want to add adapters as that would increase leverage of the tongue weight on the hitch.

You can see even with a 5” rise the nose of the trailer is a little low even without weight on it.

I think it’s because the trailer is pretty high, I’ve towed a small (empty) landscape trailer ... and several small boats with my fit. I use a regular 2” rise/drop hitch and the aforementioned trailers sat very nice behind my car (even lowered a couple inches it takes the load well)

it looks like your trailer might have the axle mounted on bottom of the springs instead of on top - raising the ride height

Thanks. I’ll order that.

Yeah the axle is below but on this trailer its one of the U channel axles and I didn’t want to modify it. I would rather just replace it someday with a proper braked axle.
