As an owner of one of the older Fits in the US and one that has spent its time in the salty north, my Fit began showing the famous "Honda Rust Spot" where the rear quarter panel meets with the bumper cover. I recently dug into this and 1)learned why these rust here and 2) did some rust repair and paint work. Rather than reproducing the whole thing right here I will share the article I wrote on Curbside Classic ( CC DIY: 2007 Honda Fit ? A Rattlecan Rust Repair ).
I share it here to encourage others to deal with this problem sooner than I did. This is an almost entirely preventable issue on the 07-08 Fit if you deal with it quickly enough.
Great write-up! I have the same spot on the rear fender and I was planning on tackling this next summer. I also have some decent rust on the roof along the windshield I need to address. I've worked with silver cars doing some rattle can work, but my Fit is blue, so we'll see how well I can blend it.
If I had one of the metallic colors I would have probably gone up to that horizontal ridge that is halfway between the wheel and the windows. The trick in stopping at a ridge within a panel is to keep that edge of the new paint as soft as you can so that you can buff it down well enough to blend. Of course you can just spot-paint it like I did and hope for the best, but that doesn't usually come out well on metallics.
Fortunately I don't have an issue on my roof. This is the first time I have been happy about the white car. The single stage paint has been a pain to maintain. Clearcoats are much easier. If I had known from the beginning that mine was not a clearcoat I would have kept it waxed better than I did.
where did you get that rear bumper protector where the trunk meets the bumper?
That was a Honda accessory that was dealer installed when we bought the car originally. I think I might have seen it in the brochure and knew that white bumper would take a beating without it. I have not regretted it.
