Dillemma: In-dash Navi, Flyaudio? Chinese HU? or others?
Hi all,
since winter is almost over, i'm gonna help my gf to install a
in-dash Navi on her 2011 Honda Fit (Canadian version)
however, i'm in a dillemma what i should get her...
Chinese navi Head Unit from foreverstarcar.com?
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...it-review.html
http://www.foreverstarcar.com/produc...dio-navigation
or Flyaudio w/ 8000series unit
https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-...-ge8-pics.html
or any other navi/ICE units + US OEM dash?
Chinese units are about $550 shipped (w/o duties/tax yet)
according to the review,
it's not costly,
looks decent,
minor soft/hardware issues
software upgrad troubles (must ship unit back to china)
Flyaudio w/8000series unit
fixes many bugs vs. 7500series
newer firmware and gadgets
looks much much much better
about $300 more than chinese HU
lifetime free software/firmware upgrades
anyhow, my gf will drive it most of the time,
she only really needed the BT, navi, mp3 access, but also
she want it to be OEM looks.....
so please help me out here~

Alpine, and yes I am biased towards them, 4 headunits and many many years have never ever let me down as a Headunit manufacturer. And I have owned many different brands from Pioneer, Sony, Alpine, Kenwood, Eclipse to name some.

I put in one of the Chinese head units ( $ 380 shipped) and it works okay.
The fit and color are good matches.
Installation is easy ( see the Fly audio DIY as this is the same).
The navigation screen is quite nice, better than I expected.
The CD ( MP3s), radio, ipod connection, and DVD player also work okay.
Screen designs on the DVD and radio are a little plain.
Didn't connect the TV antenna or use it with my phone.
Things you have to get used too.....
Each time you start the car the unit has to boot up. If you want to play music and use the Navigation screen at the same time you have to boot the Navigation screen first then the music screen. Each takes about 5 seconds.
You hit a button, wait, and then hit another button.
It does pause music for a couple of seconds now and then ( probably a Windows thing).
Bottomline, a great Nav system with a huge touch screen that is built in.
Worth the money ( IMHO ), yes, but not seamlessly integrated like a factory unit. Gives the car more character

I've got an Alpine W900BT on order but I'm having second thoughts and considering going with the more stock look of these Flyaudio units. The feature set on the W900BT is hard to turn down, though. Tough call.

I
Bought mine from automax. Speak with Matt, fast shipping and excellent support.
Just curious, where do you purchase the newest Flyaudio units from? I keep searching but can't seem to find anything useful in terms of sales. Looks like the only place is via Automax for $699, is that right?

my flyaudio 8000series review~
here is my brief review after havin' the unit installed for 1 week
Things i really like the unit:
-Unit looks OEM
-sound is very very slightly better than OEM
-Blue coloured touch screen icon looks very sharp!
-BT unit is user friendly
-includes Odyssey + Sandisk 4GB Micro SD card
-Plug n Play unit
-3 different brightness (dark for night time, bright for daytime)
-tech support responds very quickly!
-can use different GPS interface
-picture in picture for video+navi
-unlimited firmware updates
things that annoys me abit:
-radio frequencie is not point blank, AM680 is actually AM685 on the FA unit
-Glare screen when it's bright sunny day (j/ like cellphones and other DVD/navi units, i will fabricate some plastic screen and insert it to the mid-vents and see if that will help reduce glare)
-Music will start from the beginning everytime u restart the car. (hope FA will fix this bug soon)
-Odyssey GPS interface is not bad, but the volume is super low in the noisy Fit while drivin' on the highway (this can be solved by increasin' the volume of each .wav files by 3x using the window sound recorder program)
-MP3s files can be read from the MicroSD slot, so 4GB card may not be enough. (I've tried copyin' all files from the 4GB to a 8GB card, it gave me an error, maybe i will try to FORMAT the 8GB card first b4 copyin' the files from the orginal 4GB from Automax service. i was able to read the AVI files from the USB in the video function, but not the mp3s)
-BT wired microphone volume is too too low, other party can hardly hear what i speak towards the mic, i've tried relocatin' the mic to top of A-pillar and steering wheel column, but it's still too shallow, i will purchase a Sony Mic in the near future and try if it's better.
-Odyssey Navi interface is a bit weak.
(mat @ automax was able to provide methe iGo8 interface files/programs, which many lexus forum ppl praised about, and i must agreed, it's much much better, i'm really happy w/ the iGo8 now)
Nevertheless, both my GF and i adores the unit, everyone who sat in the car thought it's OEM and asked if we paid $3000 for this upgrade. It was certainly a well worth money upgrade! Thanks Mat @ Automax service, He's been a very very good help!

Do you have a cell phone that uses USB to charge? That's sort of what I'm interested in, if the USB will also charge my phone while plugged in.
#12
It charges my Droid via the USB attachment. My power cord is two pieces: the wall plug in has a female USB slot, the cord has a male USB end and a Droid end. I can take the cord and plug it into the female USB attachment in the Fit and it charges the phone as well as plays music, etc. at the same time.
