Needing to install amp power wire.
Right below the clutch pedal attachement to the firewall, there's a grommet. Removing this just shows something like a 5/16" hole that is only about a 1/4" deep and then hits metal.

If I drill this out, will it provide access to the engine compartment (w/o damaging anything in the process?

Not sure about the GE, but with every car that I've owned, I routed the power wire with the large, common wire bundle through the firewall. Then I just re-taped everything.

 

if u look above that area is the said wire bundle. u can use that.
