Hi guys- Me again with more fit woes..My '12 Fit just got broken into (welcome to the bay area), they got in through the back door quarter window, i tried to google youtube videos on how to replace it. Can i do this myself ? My deductable is too high so i can't use my insurance..wondering if anyone has done this themselves. I suspect its obviousley glued back on the frame since its not part of the back door. I called around locally and the lowest is $185. I'd like to buy the window and try to replace it myself if you guys can throw some pointers.

I can give you this video link and recommend an adhesive via amazon or ebay, but would advise against this service. A good portion of the cost may well be the glass.
I haven't done it myself because I don't like using blunt/scraping tools near paint. Even a non-marring scraper can make a scratch via force and friction, and you'll likely have to buy the glass from one of the gents that could do the work. BUT! If it must be done, a deft hand and a healthy wrist will be necessary. I'm so sorry you're going through this again.
Hopefully you'll get a smartie to respond, if not though, post up specifics and I'll scratch my head with yuh.

I thought you could DIY a temp fix with plexiglass but highway aerodynamics and pressure differentials might just blow that out which would be a safety hazard.

You can get the rear quarter glass on amazon new for $95, ebay for $50 used, and your local junkyard should be cheaper but you will have to call.

I don't know what bits you can recycle or adhesives would be required. Just get this right for safety purposes.

 

Thanks heaps guys for the quick responses..I am sitting at a glass place as we speak..I found a place that will do it for $155 including the glass so I figure that's a fair deal..perhaps not worth the hassle to attempt myself.

 

I think that is a good deal.

You don't need OEM hardware but this needs to be well adhered and waterproof which a pro can do in a few minutes.

 

Fiting - thanks for the tip, i already got it replaced..in the end i dont think i would have saved more than $50 doing it myself..plus buying the tools, waiting for the window to arrive in the mail all seemed like its not worth the hassle to save a few bucks.

I can tell you that at one point in her life, my mother was trying to own and maintain vehicles valued in the 100's of dollars, not thousands. Their relative worthlessness, had no defensive protection against them being broken into and even stolen outright.

She had vehicles that I wouldn't even want...outright stolen.
And break in's were also to be expected.

Cheaper vehicles are also more likely to NOT have an alarm, and/or possibly a camera.

 

Yes. All glass can be replaced. Lookup jazz honda fit manual. Go to the section on Windows. Find quarter glass section. It'll give you the removal steps and install steps. Should be easy since its so small. Also junkyard fits rarely have damage to that piece.

 

J20- Thanks for the tip..had it replaced a few days ago-it was a decent price so i went for it.

 

It's not the cost of the car, but the items left inside the car is the reason why anyone will break into a car. I got my Audi broken into once because they saw a phone charging cable and just assume that the phone was also in the car.

 

In my case, i had no visible items ripe for a hijacking...the bay area is notorious for break-ins and so few would be foolish or tardy these days by leaving any tell-tale signs in the car.

I've since got the window replaced and no longer park on that same street but that doesnt mean it wont happen anywhere else.

Someone suggested getting "window insurance", i'm with Geico so i'll be looking into it whenever time allows.

Anyone got an idea how much extra window insurance is on average ?

I can't try to fathom the psychology behind "why" a thief might pick a really cheap vehicle. My mothers cars at the time, made the Honda Fit seem like a luxury vehicle.
I sometimes assumed it was very young kids...budding criminals. Maybe they broke in or tried to steal my Mothers wrecks because they had one? Or knew somebody that had one and had "practiced"? Maybe they were looking at chop shop parting out more than overall value?

One time the thieves were actually able to break in, get the vehicle started...but evidently they only made it blocks away, because the vehicle failed.
I was always amazed that anyone would risk a criminal record, trying to steal one of my mothers vehicles.

This was maybe 20 years or so ago. Before the government implemented "Cash for Clunkers". It's actually kind of hard, to find the type of beat up, roadside, high mileage vehicles my mother use to gamble on.
Maybe the closest approximation would be "The Worst of Craigslist".

 

That "Cash for Clunkers" was an all out scam.

-- It put a lot of new gas guzzling SUVs and pickups on the road.

--It also removed a lot of inexpensive cars availble to the population.

--And by slashing the pool of used cars available, used car prices skyrocketed in the US (and continue to be very inflated today). Look at the prices for similar used cars in Europe and weep.

 

I had a few cars broken into. My beat up GTI had the fog lights stolen in a beach town in south spain. The police refused to take a report, noting I was the lucky one as a few dozen cars on that street were hit much worse that night. As was the case every night.

I had a different beat up GTI in the US and the passenger window was smashed. Theif found about $0.75 and some lint in the closed ash tray. I was on the highway before I noticed the broken window and thought the theif might be in the back or the hatch for some silly reason. That was scary but looking back on it, not scary at all..

In both cars I kept the hatch uncovered, glove box open, and zero items in sight. Both were parked on well lit major city streets.

The fog lights looked cool but did nothing so I just purchased some VW plastic covers. For the broken window, I just went to the local junkyard and found a used window and some other nice interior bits for $20 cash.

 

yeah..those were the days when cars were built to be repaired by just about any "joe blow" mechanic..i had a GTI as well..a stick shift, one of the best cars i ever owned. It actually had a souped up engine so it was a joy to drive...AND i could take it to just about any freelance mechanic working out of his garage for any repairs i needed. I miss the simple times when everything was plain and straight forward. Anyone remember the days when people used to JUMP AROUND on top of their American tank cars...thats another joy i miss hehe...try jumping around the lid of your latest import and it'll probably cave in on you..cars with real bumpers and low cut rear ends when you could still see out the back window....those were the days indeed. I would trade it all back for those times in a minute.
