Headlight move up and down

Hey guys! My mom had an 09 fit sport 5 speed for 7 years and she just got a CRV so I bought the fit from her. Its been a great car for her and has 240,000 miles on it already. Recently the headlights have been wiggly while driving so today I checked it out and if I grab the connector going to the headlight bulb, I can move the whole bulb assembly up and down on both headlights. I'm just checking to make sure this is not normal before getting new headlights. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

There is a spring clip that holds the bulb in place inside of the housing. It looks like someone took the old Microsoft Office Assistant paper clip and bent it all out of shape. You almost have to squeeze it together and swing it out in order to move the bulb. I would check to see if it is firmly in place before replacing the bulbs/headlight housing.

Yep, that's all good. Everything seems to be intact so maybe something on them broke internally...

Not sure how something would get broken. I suspect you do not have the bulb set in properly or maybe even the wrong bulb. Check it again or even just have a freindly mechanic have a look. New headlights are expensive.

well it’s the whole bulb assembly that moves, not just the bulb

I think the other guys are right. It's probably not installed correctly, especially if its on both sides. Wrong bulb possibly, but the H4 connector fits so I don't think it's that. I think it might be installed behind the clip, but in front of the boot. Can you post pictures?

The H4 bulbs have a metal 'plate' with 3 prongs. That has to be installed in the correct orientation to fully nest into the headlight fixture. If it's not sitting properly, the metal clip won't close fully and it will allow the bulb to wiggle. If the bulb is installed while the clip is closed, it won't be seated properly and it will wiggle. If the rubber boot is installed properly in either instance, it will prevent the bulb from popping out, but will still wiggle if the bulb is not properly seated in the headlight fixture.

If you really want new headlights, go for it, but I think this sounds like a simple fix.

That all looks solid. If the bulb is broken such that the metal plate part is loose, its just a new bulb and that’s relatively cheap. If the bulb is solid, could it be the headlight adjustment screw/worm gear have worn out?

Sucks if this is a headlight replacement cost goes up a bit if it is.

Maybe it’s something like this video (different car)

I’m hoping you find what it is, and you end up having a cheap problem rather than the more costly one.

Man, I like buying parts for my 86 Ford a lot more... Went to a salvage yard today that had a 2010 Fit Sport and pulled the drivers headlight (passenger was damaged) and both fog lights for $200! Ordered the passenger one off Ebay for $70. Pricey day for the Fit! But the headlight I got today doesn't move at all like my current ones do so at least I know for sure that mine are messed up.

Please fiddle with the old ones. Compare closely with the new ones. Something strange going on here. Maybe swap a bulb.

Big day for the Fit! After I had the old ones out, I looked them over a lot and discovered that the adjustment screw that was mentioned earlier was stripped out on both headlights causing the housing to move around freely... not a great design

maybe my mom hit some serious potholes before selling it to me lol but the car does have 240k on it so maybe just a lot of vibration over time?
