09 Fit Fuel Door sticks

My '09 Sport with 96k km has developed a sticking fuel door — the release plunger doesn't always work. I tried some penetrating lube on it to no effect and I'm now assuming that it will need to be replaced but I can't find any info on how to do that — I tried removing the retaining screw but can't figure out how to actually remove the little plunger assembly. My Haynes manual is no help — they don't even mention the fuel door. Anyone know how to do this?

I'll look in the service manual when I get off work today, around 6 pm central or so.

Fit fuel door release sticks

Thanks for the post, but the video shows a different version of fuel door than my '09 Fit Sport. I tried removing the Phillips head screw but that didn't appear to accomplish anything & I'm reluctant to start prying, etc. without knowing more about how the plunger assembly can be accessed. I tried some lube on the plunger to no avail.

Looks like there is a hidden screw on the top left of release "button" maybe pry that off and see what's behind it.

Edit: Remove that screw and you can pull just enough out to get to the retaining tabs on the backside and pull the assembly out; I just tried this on my '10 Fit Sport. Best of Luck

^^^ If that works...great! If it doesn't... I would squeeze the two tabs first and see if it gives.

The two tabs on the top are 90 degrees offset from the ones on the rear, normally there is a rubber dust boot over the retaining shaft. Let me try and see if it works.
Edit: I tried to release those tabs but they didn't really move and I was afraid of breaking something that works. I think the only way to remove the retainer is to get at the tabs on the backside.

P.S. One can simply open the gas cover by using a screwdriver and prying it open, the "Retainer" just pops the door open and doesn't actually lock it closed.

Thanks. Since the plunger assembly sticks so much I think that it will have to be replaced so I'm going to get a new one — hopefully seeing the back of the new one will offer some clues about removing the existing one. I'm not too thrilled with having to use something to pry the cover open and damage the paint.

Here are some photos that may help you in removal of the plunger/retainer.

After removing screw and pulling it out far enough to get behind.

A look at the whole plunger/retainer.

Okay, thanks so much. It appears that the source of the problem might be due to the absence of the rubber cap which has allowed dirt to get into the plunger. Not sure when or how the cap disappeared.

If you look at the bottom of the plunger, you might be able to see some "drain" holes. Maybe, spray WD-40 onto it and let it drain out before install, might save you some money.

the mk2 is more east to fix than the mk3 with the cable release under dash, there isnt even an inspection hatch to get to it, you must have to remove all the carpets etc
