Is battery housing necessary?

I'm replacing the battery in a 2011 Fit. The new battery has a weird plastic trim that sticks out along the bottom (along both long sides) and means the battery won't fit in the plastic housing. Can I just remove the housing? I checked and the battery fits fine and feels fully secure without it, but I want to check if this will cause me problems or is otherwise a bad idea. TIA!

Edit: here's a stock picture of the battery so you can see what I mean.

Here's how it looks in there with no housing:

You'll be fine without the plastic tray. The only real purpose it serves is to contain any fluid that might happen to spill out from a traditional lead acid battery. Since your battery is Sealed Maintenance Free (SMF), that's not a concern. If your battery leaks, you've got much bigger issues than the flimsy plastic tray containing it.
