2009 fit sport axle/s crack lengthwise…

So , one day I was taking a right turn, made it about 100 ft and had no drive, had to push it to a station… had car towed, they said one axle was broken and other was about to go… they fixed it and said that instead of a snapping of the axle, it had cracked the whole length of the axle.. mechanic said he hadn’t seen that in his 20 years of fixing cars… was there a recall? We don’t drive it hard, it was basically never driven a lot. We got it with around 50kmiles and it’s at 86k miles… why would this happen?? Is this a known thing?

There is a technical service bulletin for Fit axles in winter salt states, including Massachusetts. There are many posts here about the issue. Honda will inspect and replace rusted axles. I believe I have heard of some folks getting reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses associated with failed axles, so it's worth asking at the dealership. If you did the repair recently and have the receipts you may have a chance.

As far as an axle breaking lengthwise, I haven't heard about that before. Was it rusted or just fractured lengthwise?

It sort of suggests a manufacturing defect, but in that case you would expect the problem to develop earlier on a nearly 15-year-old car.
