Can I program my key as a fob only, without programming the transponder circuit?

I bought a 2010 Fit Sport that had a key without the remote buttons. As I understand it, all Fits have keyless entry systems (please correct me if I'm wrong!) and I very much miss having a fob.

I saw
and was quoted by a local locksmith at $45 for a remote key and cut, then another $150 to program it to actually start the vehicle. My question is, can I just buy the key and have it cut, program the fob for keyless entry, and then have the transponder circuit programmed when I have more money, just using it to unlock the car in the meantime? Or will the method shown in the video not work unless the key is programmed to the ignition?

I've tried Googling this to death and either it's a dumb question or I'm just not using the right words. Any help is appreciated!!!!
