Excerpt of pertinent info from the manual:

The audio system reads and plays the audio files on the USB flash
memory device in MP3, WMA or AACꭧ formats. Only AAC format files recorded with iTunes are playable on this audio unit.

MP3 files are:
– Sampling frequency: 32/44.1/48 kHz (MPEG1); 16/22.05/24 kHz (MPEG2)
– Bit rate: 32/40/48/56/64/80/96/112/128/160/192/224/256/320/VBR kbps (MPEG1); 8/16/24/32/40/48/56/64/80/96/112/128/144/160/VBR kbps (MPEG2)

WMA files are:
– Sampling frequency: 32/44.1/48 kHz
– Bit rate: 48 －320/VBR kbps (Max 384)
– Supported standards: WMA version 7/8/9

AAC files are:
– Sampling frequency: 8/11.025/12/16/22.05/24/32/44.1/48 kHz
– Bit rate: 8－320 kbps
– Supported standards: MPEG4/AAC LC and MPEG2/AAC LC

In WMA or AAC format, DRM (digital rights management) files cannot be played. If the system finds a DRM file, the audio unit displays UNPLAYABLE FILE, and then skips to the next file.

 

This last part concerns me since I do have some iTunes purchases on my iPod that have DRM (the "iTunes Plus" songs are not DRM'd, but most iTunes content is protected).

But this incompatibility seems to be contradicted by this post from thejrnf in the iPhone thread:

Thanks Wongnog! I'm a little confused though. You said but then also said Can I load my iTunes files in AAC format onto the USB and have it work or not?

 

For songs purchased through iTunes, you'd hafta burn them onto a CD using iTunes, then re-import them as you would a regular CD.

You can then transfer those unprotected files to a flash drive(or iPhone), for Fit playage.

Be sure to set your encoding preferences before importing.

 

DRM music is different if it's played on an iPod vs a flash drive. My guess is the iPod basically handshakes with the USB cable, letting it know it's ok to play DRM tracks, but just a flash drive can't do this.

 

i have a 2gb Lexor
and i just put the music in and it worked.
didn't even bother with all that.
but just so you guys know most of my files are
mp3 and windows media files and the work.

Well, in the manual where it specifically addresses iPods, it says:

That makes it sound like even the iPod cannot play its protected files through the USB port. Hopefully it is a misprint and it only applies to flash memory ...

 

I'm thinking so, because others have reported songs from iTunes working fine coming from the iPod.

 

We're playing iTunes downloaded songs fine on the Nano (just not the mini or the original type iPod).

 

That's good to hear! These aren't iTunes Plus songs though, right? Those purchases have no DRM. Maybe the statement is a CYA measure by Honda ...

This is exactly right. AAC without DRM will play from a flash drive. AAC with DRM will not play from a flash drive but will play through an iPod.

 

"iTunes Plus" are songs you can buy through iTunes that do not have DRM. Apple came out with a limited selection of songs ripped at 256kbps (rather than 128kbps) and with no DRM. I checked this morning and the "iTunes Plus" songs play just fine on a USB stick, and from the iPod of course.
