My father and I talked them down to $15,700 in New Rochelle, NY. But my dad's a former car wholesaler, so he knows the ropes pretty damn well. $17.2 is more than the salesman's initial offer to us. He first offered us $16.9. My dad told him that he's full of shit.

you know, there's a lot more to it than just sticking to your guns though. And i really just learned this on that day that my father and I purchased it. One of the biggest mistakes is showing interest in the car. I wanted the car, and I even complimented it as I drove it with the salesman in the passenger seat. That hurt us slightly in our negotiating power, but since I came to the dealership intent on seeing this one particular model, it didn't make too much of a difference.

I used to own a Honda Prelude, and I was crazy about the car, and also 8 years younger, and since i showed so much excitement about it, the salesman got us good and we paid sticker price for it.

But this time around, with the fit, I shut the hell up and let my father do the talking. My dad says "15.5" and the salesman laughed at him and called him crazy. Gave him the whole shpeel on how the Fit Sport is basically fully loaded (except for navigation) and how it's so popular and that there really isn't much room to wiggle with the price. My dad didn't budge. We slowly brought the guy down, he kept stepping away to consult his "managers" and he'd come back with a slightly better offer. My was pretty steadfast, but we did go up to 15.7 eventually. We were also willing to walk away. I didn't need the car that moment, I had 2 weeks to find one, and my dad was confident he would get the price he wanted.

My dad reminded me, the sticker price is the MSRP (manufacturer's SUGGESTED retail price), and since the dealership is a wholesaler, they paid much less than that. We guess that they paid maybe $13K for that fit.

If I could do that whole day over again, I would've had my father and I roleplay for the dealer. I would've been the young man who's father is buying him a car, but hates the car that his father has chosen for him. That way I would seem completely uninterested in the car. Would've strengthened my dad's negotiating power.

Aug 21 was the day!

New Blue Fit Sport, 800 mi. later all is almost good, except the battery goes dead if you listen on accessory any longer than about 30 min. which shouldn't be the case. Also has a hard time cranking when it's cold. Will take it in on Mon. Other than that all that is Fit is good!

Tax and license fees vary a LOT from state to state (even city to city in some states) so the out the door price is not a fair comparison.

I just got home with my 2009 ORM Fit. Man I love this thing and I'm very happy with the color I chose. I left the lot with 13 miles. I ended up paying 17,200 for mine. Pictures to come soon in the pictures thread.
