Front speaker replacement

There's some info on this in the forum already but I'd like some more detail from those who've done it or know about it.

I think the clarity of the Fit Sport Nav audio system sucks. I want to take a first step of replacing the front 2 speakers at least.

Here are a few questions:

- Where is the factory amp, or is it just integrated in the (nav) head unit?
- The sport model has component speakers I think. I see the tweeters so are the door speakers component as well or coax? If they're component, where is the crossover?
- The guy at Cartoys that I spoke to said that since it's a component setup, we'd have to find the crossover and bypass it for the door speaker if I wanted to use coax, or replace it if I wanted to go component. Agree?
- Is the 160W (40W/ch) sufficient to drive a pair of decent aftermarket speakers?
- Can you get Best Buy or other audio retailers to do free install with purchase?

Thanks,
Kurt

1. Amp is integrated
2. no components just speakers.
3. not sure what kind of speakers are you getting?
4. free install. i don't think so unless they are desperate or the
speakers cost double. then again I'm not sure what kind
of deals they have in your area.

good luck

Thanks for the info guys. I haven't decided on the speakers yet. I listened to some Apline's that I liked for about $140/pair.

I have not done my speakers yet but because Im poor and Ill wait till I blow out the stock ones But I would do the extra and like mentioned earlyer and in other forums on this topic opt for all 4 component speakers and add an amp. With the components you will obtain better bass than coax (unless you are adding a sub to your fit) and I'm not going to add a sub personaly.

Hey peeps,
I'm in the market to swap my speakers too. (09 fit spt, no nav) So, I gather from this components r the way to go, w added amp, right? Ok, so that being said, how would I go about adding the amp to the factory set-up? I have done this on an 06 Bimmer but the amp was in the trunk and easily accessable. Would I buy a signal converter "thing" and have to wire it through the back of the head unit? Thats where the factory amp is, right? Is this the case? Is the head unit as much of a pain in A** to remove as the 08 fit? Any help would greatly be appreciated! Also, what r the factory spkr sizes? I don't have a tape measure or ruler, and I have been searching the net all morning and can't find it! Are the front and rear the same? I am looking for an easy spkr install, so which size is best. Thanx in advance!

the front speakers are 6.5, the front tweeters are 3/4, and the rears are 6.5 ..... as far as wiring the amp i believe you would need to wire a line output converter since you intend to amp a factory hu. If you plan on replacing your fronts with a good component system make sure to first pop off the stock tweeters and check them out. Reason being... i didnt and now i gotta do a custom jobby with mine.

Warning! This install is not as easy as it seems!

Wait until you pull off your door panels - you'll shit a brick. The damn OEM speakers are far from a normal design. The oem speakers are molded to a piece of plastic which fits into the door with a single screw and 2 clips. The hole is not perfectly circular. I had to pull out the damn RotoZip and start cutting sheetmetal. Sure you can just use a 1inch spacer but that is just no fun at all. Besides, that 1in spacer hurts you power/weight rofl. No matter how you look at it, you WILL be drilling some holes. Don't even bother trying to mount the speakers to the OEM speaker bracket by ripping out the speaker cone itself. I've already tried and failed. The build will be too big and hit the door panel. At this point you will give up in frustration and start cutting which you should have started doing a half hour ago

I bought the $50 set of Sony Xplode 4way 6 1/2in speakers at wallmart. They can be vampire tapped into the stock wiring and they sound Great with my sub. I did not need (nor can I justify) a seperate amp or xover for the door speakers. They are loud enough to fill an entire parking lot with mid-high and my subs do the rest.

I have an 09 fit base model and I will agree with Lyon that the oem speaker setup is odd, but I found it rather easy to install a set of component speakers.

I took a dremel with a cut-off wheel and cut everything off of the plastic speaker cage of the oem one and used it as a mount for my speakers. It was a solid fit and I did not have to do any drilling or cutting to my door. There was also plenty of room inside the door panel for the x-overs. I will take some pictures and post them soon.

This thread would make a good sticky.

So if there are no external crossovers does that mean the headunit outputs 6 channels?

Also, can someone take pics of the tweeters and the mounting location?

crossover '12 tweets

If you look closely at the dash mounted tweeters, there is a capacitor mounted solidly on the housing. It is small and easy to miss if you don't know what you are looking for. I was surprised that it was an Elna brand cap which should be a good quality and it is rated at 50v, but I couldn't see the value. Anyway, I bet the door speakers are full range and the tweets just support the highs which are very directional. The single cap means that it is a 6db first order simple affair.

here is the link for the brackets you need to replace the speakers, in the past I’ve also cut the factory speaker out with a knife and re used the factory one. These are much easier, no cutting or grinding required the install is very easy.
