The only reason the OP's valve failed is because he/she torqued it from the nipple and not the base of the valve, which is 100% improper use of the product. The real benefit of a Fumoto valve is not so much convenience as it is insurance against damaging the threads of the oilpan
after repeated removal and re-installation of the drainplug.

At the end of the day, it's not about 19 cents, it's about missing the point completely.

If your that incompetent not to cross thread a bolt,or not know how to torque a bolt by hand, you have no purpose touching a wrench, period!!!
I have a 1991 Volvo from new with the original plug 219,000 miles thats a lot of oil changes, give me a break.

That's so picayune,,,,,, but whatever. If he or she torqued the wrong part of the valve, then I guess you missed my point.

Actually the problem is cross threading the oil pan with the drain bolt. That can get costly.

how the hell does one cross thread the plug? if it doesn't go in by hand, you're doing it wrong. back out, try again. very simple no need for fancy valves unless you're tracking your car and need to change the oil frequently.

Forget making a point, that's the problem here. You kids are missing the issue.

Again - the problem lies in the short run of threads in the oil pan. The plug threads are not harmed in the least, it's the oil pan that gets it.

You might never have an issue, however, it is not an uncommon occurrence.

The reason for the Fumuto and similar drain valves is in response to the problem. Self-tapping over sized oil drain plugs are readily available. The difficulty is with the tiny bits of oil pan that might get left in the engine. Now a simple cross-threading mistake can cost the price of a new engine.

Oil pan drain valves eliminate a DIY'ers inexperience.

Now go have a brew..........

if you cant do a simple oil change, you should not be wrenching anything on or around your car period.
the Fit is like the easiest car to do oil changes on.

No. A tiny piece or two or five of metal in the oil pan pre filter is not going to destroy your engine.

+1. and it will drain out with it when you flush your oil next time.

if one's real anal, get a oil filter magnet to make you feel good. i dont use it.

funny you speak of the funnel. Everytime I go and put oil into the fit, some of my larger funnels don't fit in that small crevice. I have to use my smallest funnel and even then, that's a tight fit (no pun intended).

Meh, you guys can complain about the fumoto valve all you guys want, but over in the 'lude forums, we love that thing. I guess you wouldn't NEED it if you don't do your own oil changes, but if you have bad aim like me, why not?

got mine on.

I can see how the nipple can get sheered off. you would think the hex brass nut part is strong enough since it's made of brass...

but i used a 3/4'' and elbow greased it to get the valve to the 12 o clock position.

one thing remains... leaky oil from the oil filter being twisted off. anyone put a oil filter relocater on yet?

Why don't you try putting a piece of clear tubing attached to the funnel, and pour the oil in that way. Or you can use a 2 liter bottle, with the bottom cut off and with clear tubing attached to the threaded part, works great in all apps.

Good old goose-neck oil spout or a long neck funnel I'm thinking.

if you guys are that cheap you should at least be a little street smarter like cutting a small pet bottle's bottom off, flipping it over and making it into a tall funnel.
