Clean up Stickies & announcements
Clean up Stickies & announcements
OK, So i've gotten tired of having to scroll past the same stickies and announcements for what seems to be forever. The 2nd Gen Fit forums has the following stuck at the top of the screen:
Here are my thoughts:
A single DIY Sticky called "DIY - Lowering, Turn Signal Mirrors, Sway bar, door unlocking & More..." , with links to the individual DIY's... (or can we have a sub forum for DIY's
combine the Two announcments into one and remove the GE/GD Debate
~SB
yes... I did add to another existing post in the website forums but no responses as of yet and much of this only applies to this single subforum because of the severe number of stickies.
- 5 DIY stickies
- a walk around of the GE8 from 2007 (which is now in it's 2nd year of US Production - 3rd year overall)
- Announcements about the GE/GD debate which seems to be all but over.
- Two announcements that could be lumped into one (rules & Posting photos)

OK, so this was my thought for the DIY thread:
It could also be a collection of DIY Threads related to the GE8 but are located elsewhere in the Forum (such as in the In Car Electronics SubForum).
Here's a collection of DIY Threads all stored in one place:
DIY: Turn Signal Mirrors (winkers)

Honestly I think the whole forum needs cleaning up. Before I had my fit I had a 93 Prelude. I visited a forum called preludeonline.com and it was very organized. AND it covered 4+ generations of a car whereas the fit (in the usa) only has 2.
This forum software has an "Ignore Thread" feature that is not enabled. If enabled by the site admin you can just click on a thread one time and then under Thread Tools you can permanently hide the thread from your view forever. It works on stickies too.
Other forums I go to have this feature enabled and it lets everyone handle it the way they'd like.
So I vote for the site admin to enable "Ignore Thread"

What the forum needs is to be setup in a way that forces threads to be organized. If there was a DIY sub-forum that's where all the DIY posts would go. Sure, there may not be a lot of them now but after a few years there will be. The forum will eventually need to be re-organized anyway. Why not do it now while there are only a few threads to move instead of later when there are hundreds?
Putting the few DIY threads we have into one single thread is just a bandaid solution. What happens when more DIY threads pop up? Someone will be in charge of manually adding them to the "main" DIY thread? That'll never survive.
See www.rx8club.com for an example of very good car enthusiast forum organization.

Unfortunately, I don't think there's really alot of time for the mods to take on that task (major re-organization) but I'm hoping that I have a few suggestions that might help clean up a little. I think a few of the stickies/announcements can just go away and become regular threads again. we don't need an overview of the "new" GE, don't need to continue the "debate" and a few others I think can be put back into circulation. Since the Mods seem to be busy and I've now been here for a little bit, I'd like to try and do my part to assist. I agree that creating a DIY SubForum makes sense but I think it will take more work. One of the benefits of having a member generated DIY thread is; that member can update it (and so can the mods). You can also link to other threads elsewhere in the forum (or even elsewhere online) and still have them listed in the one location that most all GE owners go. oh... and as originally stated, you don't have a dozen threads "stuck" at the top of the screen.
I think 2 announcements & 3 stickies (or any combination of the two) should be the max number of threads that remain at the top. Any announcement that "remains" at the top forever is a policy item and should be put in the rules & Regs - the Announcements should be for Short term notices such a site updates, changes in policy, etc...
My $.02... or $.04 (at this point)

It's called "DIY: Repair and Maintenance" which leaves out modifications. Perhaps a simple name change is in order.
I also tagged it onto another post in Site Suggestions. That post/subforum hasn't been touched in a while and there doesn't seem to be anyone watching over there. That along with the fact that the majority of comments are directed towards this individual subforum because the stickies that need to be cleaned up are here, not anywhere else (that I go). I waited a week with no response over there before posting anything here.
Thanks for cleaning up the stickies... Can we get the "unlock my doors please" moved over to the DIY too since it's essentially a "read the manual" DIY and not a modification or repair related thing anyway.
Also, any chance of the GE/GD Debate thing coming down? haven't seen any discussion/arguments about that... I think Ever... so i'm guessing it's not really an issue. If it is, it should be posted in the rules/regs for the site.
Would it make sense to have a single sticky in this thread with links to those DIY's?
Thanks again,
~SB
