A review (LONG!!!)
A review (LONG!!!)
So we all love our Fits, mostly. I have low mileage on mine (about 1800) so I have not had as much time with it as some of you. This weekend, the wife and I took a 475 mi trip and I wanted to do a report here--mainly for people looking to buy a Fit that still have questions. For reference, I am in my 50s, drive pretty conservatively, and am picky but reasonable about my cars. I don't ask them to do things they were not designed to do but I expect them to do the things they WERE designed to do very well. BTW, I am driving 2010 Sport with MT. OK, here goes:
This trip took me on highways with clear sailing where I had to do over 70 to keep up with the cars in the slow lane. I had at least 7 sections with some stop and go traffic. I drove for a brief time in Philly so a little city driving was mixed in. Weather was warm enough that I ran the AC at times.
- Mileage: 40.9. During this trip, it became obvious to me that the Fit's best fuel efficiency (at least for the MT) is at 65 or below. I saw stop and go and bottlenecks that had me in third gear a lot and this did not seem to hamper fuel efficiency. Once I got over 70, the mileage started to drop. I started the trip on slower sections of highways and the average was right around 44 MPG after about 150 miles. Later, on the wide open roads where I had to keep it over 70, the mileage dropped but I still managed an average almost 41 in the end.
- Seats. Much better than I had ever hoped. I was originally very concerned about the seats but now that I have some miles on them, I think they are great.
- Driving position. There was a thread recently by someone who feels the wheel can't be positioned close enough to the body. I do too. But rest assured you can find a good compromise. On this road trip, I did and it was fine. Never had to touch it. Bonus points, in this position, I get no seat rock.
- Noise. At 65, the RPMs are right around what? 3200. I can honestly say there is not much engine noise at all. Most of the noise is road noise coming from the tires. Wind noise is noticeable but not bad at all. Over smooth roads, the car is as quiet as I could have hoped for. Once you get the RPMs way up (75 or more), the engine noise comes into play but still not too bad.
- Handling. The car handles just great for my tastes. Very sharp handling so you have to pay attention but not tiring or twitchy. When I get into narrow, winding sections (like construction zones), it's great to have a fine handling car like this to keep your lane position at 60-65 MPH. In the New York Metro area, there are many such sections and people don't slow down or give you any sort of break. I'd hate to drive any car with washy steering or handling in these instances.

Thanks. I'm glad you liked it.
Yeah, both my wife and I got smitten with the white. First white car I've had. And believe me, I am no photographer. I just point and shoot. I guess I just got lucky on that one.
