I mention this in other thread but the magic number 256 doesn't work all the time. I think it's more has to with brand and what's the cache of ur HDD. I have a 500gb Seagate HDD 5400 rpm 8mb in a Sabrent enclosure, and works fine (only 1 partition). And I've been using this same combo with my Z4 since 2 yrs ago. Also I mention this that when I had it in my Z4, it skips what it was playing when I go over a hard bump due to super hard suspension, but not with my Fit. I had to put a double sided tape to secure in position since it was moving so much tho.

when i partitioned both drives to around the 250 gig range...the 'USB No Song' went away and the mp3's played back fine. once the partitions got into the 260 range...it was a no go.

so again...in this situation...formatted to fat32 and kept at around 250gig and both WD's worked. YMMV

that's my story and i'm sticking to it.
Foot in mouth! Good for you!

all in good fun. wish it hadn't been so complicated for myself. maybe my trial and errors might help people with the issues that they are having.

at least there's a strong chance for users that want to utilize those same drives that i have that that that might work for them?

Is this the 16 gb sandisk cruzer with the U3 partition? You have to remove that and make it a regular USB drive.

I think my 8GB still has the U3 Partition but it's not encrypted with a password and it works. (I'll have to check) My 32GB won't work because of the Password/Encryption but that's not an issue because I use that for work.

This sounds like the answer:

Windows XP and Windows 2000 limit partition creation to no larger than 32GB on FAT32. This limitation is by design: Microsoft wants you to use NTFS for large drives. If you use Windows Me or Windows 98 to format a drive, XP and Win2K can use a FAT32 partition larger than 32GB; however, these OSs can't create the partition. Also, keep in mind that when you use ATA/IDE hard disks larger than 127GB, you might need to update your computer's or hard disk controller's BIOS to properly support those larger drives.

FAT 32 has a HUGE partition limit. I believe it is 2TB (512K clusters) or 8TB(32k Clusters). windows XP and 2000 Limit the boot partition on new installation to 32GB if choosing FAT32. The key word here is boot partition. XP and 2K want to be on NTFS and I think the installer used when doing an initial install couldn't handle over 32GB (FAT32). The OP has already partitioned his larger drives as FAT32 (up to 250GB) and I've done large partitions myself.
