Correct.
DI became standard on the Miata around 2015 or 2016, IIRC.

I found an article discussing modification of electronic power steering systems to customize feel, if that appeals to any of you. it's pretty relevant with newer cars switching to that tech.

Is the opposition to direct injection due to experience with dirty intake valves? I read about that when the honda CRFs switched over to direct injection some years back. I'm sure stuffs improving but not sure how that issue will be/has been tackled.

It is for me, even though I have no personal experience. What I read about DI, whether it's Audi R8s or cheap subcompacts (3rd Gen. Fits??), DI presents problems that OEMs are willing to ignore. Walnut blast my valves? I don't think so. I'll take another serving of good old port injection if I can find it.

My ex has a loaded 2015 Mazda3 GT she bought new. It is more refined than the Fit. The interior is higher scale...seat warmers front and rear and nicer materials with a more solid and expensive feel. The infotainment sticking out of the middle of the dash looks awkward, but it is in a logical position. The ride is smoother yet controlled. Exterior, the car looks more expensive than it is. That said, it's sluggish feeling out of Sport mode. Use of Sport mode results in a big sacrifice in fuel mileage. It has 18" tires that are expensive to replace. Road feedback and steering feel is numb or subdued in comparison. There's about the same cargo capacity, though the rear seats are more cramped. No "magic seats" which are really nice to have sometimes. It's a great car, but I'll take the smaller, sportier car. The Fit really just needs some decent tires in a decent size to get the most out of it, and it can be flogged daily while still seeing decent fuel consumption figures.

decent? More like phenomenal!
This thing gives fuel economy figures that's almost in Prius territory!
Given the amount of aftermarket mods and the overall fun-to-drive factor, it's a fantastic city car!

If you want something more well-rounded that you could (or would want to) take on a road trip, this isn't it.

Don't be caught up in the compact/sub-compact. The Fit is classified the same as a Yaris, but it is much bigger. (Wife has a Yaris, I have a GE8)

That being said, the Fit does have more room, MUCH better visibility, and as not ideal as the infotainment is in the Fit, the Mazda 3 is MUCH worse. I now sell Kias for a living and we had a used 2019 Mazda 3 GT on the lot. It drove VERY nice, steering is amazing, however I couldn't see a thing out of it. Nevermind cargo of course.

If you like old-school Hondas, buy a Fit. It's the last of its kind. Loud, vibrating V-Tec, buttery smooth manual. Honda has dropped the Accord manual and Civic manual. But after driving a 2019 Accord Manual, it was actually awful. Felt like a $3 gear box made of a weird semi-hard spaghetti.

Go for test drives, make a decision sooner than later, chip shortages are real and the Fit is on its way out sadly

If you are afraid of a million calls from dealerships, actually pick up, and just tell them to stop calling. I have like 20 leads that just don't pick up hoping I will stop, it is literally my job to keep calling until I talk to them. If they pick up and say "Not interested, please don't call", that's it, I stop calling heh
