New York State Fit Buyers - educate me a bit
Hi -
I'll be buying a FIT soon in New York State.
So that I'm a bit more informed when I comparison shop, can any NYS buyers tell me what charges I should expect beyond the car and destination fee? And how much they should be?
I find the 'what did you pay for your FIT' thread to be interesting, but some people give a single OTD price while others specify what they paid for car, destination charge, taxes, etc. However its hard to figure out if I'm getting a good deal (relative to others anyway) unless I know more about ancillary charges - I imagine they vary greatly by state.
Much appreciated!
Jon

It’s complicated and they play on that. They might offer you a low price on the car, but then jack up the interest rate on the loan, etc.
The way I did it was to get my financing from my bank, wholly separate from the dealership. Then I picked a dealership that had a DMV office onsite (Potamkin, but they’re since out of business, so can’t direct you there) so that they had the tags and registration right there. Then I negotiated price strictly in OTD terms—tags, taxes, everything—and asked them to throw in OEM all-season mats and installed wheel locks.
Watch out for the guy in the very last office you have to go through (i.e., after you've agreed on the OTD price). He'll try every trick in the book to sell you stuff like wheel insurance, none of which you need. Just politely decline everything.
It's a jungle. Good luck.

Can anyone itemize the taxes, reg, and tag stuff? I'm not worried about 'extras' with respect to the car, those I'll recognize at sight. But if someone says 'new car registration fee $x I want to know if its mandatory, fixed, or flexible.
Thanks in advance!
Thanks in advance!
sales tax @8.375%
license and title: $120.00
NYS inspection fee: $10.00
“dealer’s optional fee for processing application for registration and/or certificate of title”: $45.00
“DOC Fees” $25.00
NYS Tire Tax $12.50
These were the amounts in NYC in February of 2009; no idea if they're changed since then.
Sales tax is where you register the car, not where the dealer is.
I think there's a legal limit on what they can pay to register the car for you (which is easy for them, they don't have to go to the DMV, they can do it by computer) and it's worth it.
The tire tax is actually a tax (unlike the crap on your cell phone bill that they call a tax but it's really them recovering the taxes on them).
I don't remember the inspection fee, but anything else is just stuff added to make profit.
For what it's worth, Yonkers Honda (the internet guy Richard Stein) was nice to me and when other dealers called and I told them what I was about to pay they all claimed it was too low, that I was being screwed and would find out it's not an AT or not a sport model, etc. But no problems at the dealer. Of course it's 2 1/2 years later, not sure if things are the same now.
Being in a densely-populated area you have the choice of a lot of dealers so don't take any crap from them.

The basic deal is that you really don't care about anything but OTD price. Trying to negotiate the various different fees is irrelevant to actual deal. Your goal should be to get prices (OTD with all relevant fees included) from multiple different dealers.
New York Sales Tax Rates
You pay based on what county you live in, not where you buy the car.
https://harmonia.dmv.state.ny.us/Reg...terVehInfo.cfm
Here you can see what it actually costs to register the car. Mine was about $198 last year.
Processing fee is capped by law, last year it was $75, although it is optional so you can try to negotiate it away.
Inspection and tire fee are 10 and 12.5.

True Market Value of 2013 Fit Sport
Hi - Go to Edmunds.com/TMV and select the model you want with any options. I checked a Fit Sport Automatic with no other options. Here in D.C. you could buy that car for $18.3K with some negotiating. That includes destination fee but not including taxes and tags. In NY State in Ithaca NY that same configuration would cost $18.5K and the tax rate is 2% higher than here in D.C. Dealer Invoice is $18.3K here in the D.C. area.
Here was my invoice for a 2012 Fit Sport MT i bought last summer:
Price: 17,697 including destination.
Doc Fee: $75
taxable total: $17772
NYS tax @ 8.87%: $1576.38
subtotal with taxes: $19348.38
nys registration + licensing fee: $253.73
final: $19602.11
The doc fee is probably bs but in the overall scheme of things not worth getting heated over for me, plus the dealer threw in 5 free oil changes anyway.
There was also an advertising fee that I questioned and they eventually dropped, dont remember exactly how much it was. Also I payed in full and didn't finance. They were willing to sell it to me for $16.5k if I financed with them but didnt want to deal with their bs financing department, in the long run I would have been paying more than what I paid cash. Although if you have excellent credit and get a very favorable rate, you should consider it if you think you can a better return on that available cash. Maybe you're good playing the market, who knows. Good luck on the purchase.

Interestingly, Yonkers was the most expensive quote out of the half-dozen or so dealers I reached out to.
Wow. Did you speak to the internet guy? When I got his quote (almost 3 years ago) he was the lowest- it was the other dealers who said that there's no way it was a Sport AT he was offering.
But the market's changed, there's no inventory of Fits now. Sellers' market...

1 month ago, I bought a 2013 Fit Base, M/T, for $17,000 otd. That included everything, including 7% sales tax.
After dickering about price, I told them, that's all I would pay.
They sharpened their pencils, and said they could do it, if I financed $10,000 of it at 3.9%
Said I could pay iot off after 3 payments.
I said ok.
In the office, doing the paperwork, the guy said if we paid it off before 6 payments, there would be a $75 fee.
I said forget it. He went out and talked to sales mgr, came back and said they would take $75 off the price, and I could pay it off right away. He also gave me a 2.9% rate. It didn't matter, as we paid it off with the first payment.
They also let me put $3,000 on my credit card, which was good for $30 cash back. So we are out $16,970 for the Fit.
Done deal.
