It sounds like when you passed the Camry it pissed him off for some reason. He probably interpreted it as being cut off or something. He was just going to 'get even' and darn near caused a serious accident.

You handled this in a responsible manner with the wife and child. Not sure I would have /could have done the same 40yrs. ago.

On the highway, overtaking a vehicle using the right lane is illegal and dangerous. That's why all cars should always drive in the left lane. When there is little traffic, you should pass the vehicle using the left lane and then move over to the right lane when it is safe to do so (not in a turn).

Rather than overtake illegally, many drivers including myself, might try and tailgate slightly, honk, or flash the high beams to try and get a driver to move to the correct lane to execute a safe and legal passing manoeuvre. If there was no traffic then that is the perfect situation to get over into the right lane to avoid psychos like mr. Camry you encountered.

Sometimes immediately after I executed a passing manoeuvre while I am still in the left lane, some testosterone injected moron comes up behind me in an RS8 and as I flick on my blinker they continue accelerating and pass me on the right, right as I was going to move over to let them pass. You have to be extra vigilant in those situations to avoid a terrible accident. Also, when being tailgated you can try and increase speed and lane change very slowly because a faster lane change will cause a drop in forward speed and might result in the bumpers touching.

Had it not been for your driving in the left (for minutes), I would have said that the Camry was 100% at fault but since you signalled and were gonna move, I'd make it 5% / 95% deal the important thing is that everyone is ok and you found a way to fix your Fit for not too much money.

Quite the idealist aren't you Mr. Lian I gave up on this many years ago after I realized 90% of the road-going public are absolute f*cktards and I just pass wherever there's an opening. I am absolutely astonished when someone actually changes lanes to let me pass anymore.

if you no longer go for a gap that exists, you are no longer a racing driver - Ayrton Senna

Although your percentage might be close to reality, I don't see that as an excuse for driving irresponsibly. I like to drive in a lively way but when I do, I keep in mind that although driving is fun, it can have serious consequences. Overtaking on the right is dangerous and if the driver you are overtaking is one of the 10% non brain dead drivers, it could cause a devastating accident if he tried to change lanes to let you pass.

Anyway, I hope I don't come across as condescending or patronizing; I'm pretty sure everyone on fitfreak are adults that can make their own decisions. It's just that Vagl seemed to be implying that it is inconceivable that someone wouldn't attempt a right lane overtake when that is just incorrect and dangerous driving habits. Some conventions and laws are there for the benefit of everyone and had Mr. Vagl been driving on the right, mr. Hothead Camry could have blasted by at 100 mph if so desired and the Vagls might have been able to avoid a very scary and dangerous experience and the anxiety and disappointment of damaging a great looking car! If these situations can be avoided by abiding by simple conventions, why not do it? Anyway, best of luck with the repair and I'm glad no one was injured.

Thats suck man! Good to know that everyone was safe. I just bought my fit on sunday. The dealer backed it into somethig when they were getting it ready for me to take home and put a hole in thr passenger side of the rear bumper as well as cracking over half of the passenger tail light. Thank god i wasnt there when it happened or someones feelings might have been dammaged. What is it with people disrespecting new cars? Geez! I know its not nearly as bad as your brand new car story, but there are a lot of bad drivers nowdays.

Sorry if I woke up on the wrong side of the bed. But weaving all over the freeway is for girls applying make up. Expecting one to move over so U can pull up on the next persons rear is a bit much to ask. Have you looked around. With 100 cars just ahead of you, all traveling @ 70 something and your asking them all to move so you can travel @ 75.

Sounds like if he was doing 50 mph that he was texting or talking on his cell phone and you woke him up. I seem to run into this alot now days I will pass someone going slow and they will speed up and either pass me or try to tailgate. They also think they have race car driving skills that they can cut you off closer then possible. Good luck with getting the car fix and hopefully they catch the person.

100% agree. I hate it when there's a ton of cars all going the same speed and people try to thread the needle, this happens on 80 eastbound all the time. People tailgate and highbeam, do you expect all 100 cars in the left lane to move over? The freeway is packed and it's not happening.

I am talking about fairly open interstates with left lane sitters. I will give you a 5 second window to move over, if you don't do it, i'm passing on the right.

An open interstate, with 3-5 lanes to move along on my merry way. While traveling along @ 75+mph scanning the horizon 1/4-1/2 mile ahead I don't rely on the 'left' lane to overtake. Personally would rather have the other motorist just stay put. Twice a month we head to Tahoe on a Wednesday morning, 3am sharp. Theres traffic, but pleny of room for everyone out there. Do you remember the early 70's. These interstates were new, all of them baby butt smooth. Our driving has matured ten fold since those days. Had to or would have been killed by now.

Wasn't even thought of in the 70's and grew up driving in Chicago, where the roads were always shit, so I don't know that feel

I like the drive up the 80 once you get past Sacramento since they repaved it last year. Before Sac three lanes isn't even enough, i've started completely bypassing Berkley.
