Cool Suddenly out of power...Engine issue...

Hi guys,

Just wrote a quick note to introduce myself where it belongs : New to the forum

Here's the engine issue I got yesterday with my GE8 Lx MT5...

I pulled over and popped up the hood to look if something obvious could be seen and the engine was dancing all over the place with a rumble I never heard from Hondas... Didn't find anything obvious under the hood and got to get it towed to Honda dealership (not the one I got it from, I was pretty far from home and didn't want to pay the towing for a 100km tow)... but if that is known symptoms to a known problem I could use the saved money from fixing it by myself instead of letting it done by the stealership
Let me now if you can think at something I must check to fix it

Take care guys

How many miles on it. What comes to mind is coil pack. Loss of poor and bang ignition going off at the wrong time. No check engine light. Is car under warranty? Had a 1991 Civic hatch when the coil started to act up, 230000 miles while on highway there was a bang loss of power the car would start going again and flames of the unburnt fuel coming out the exhaust pipe. Did that twice in two different occasions coil tested fine replaced with another one had laying around never did it again. Good luck.

Sorry forgot to mention... 75,000km on it... So engine under warranty but I guess the coil pack are not...

Thanks for your time and for the hint

This seems like a recurring problem. (See, https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/1st-...equested.html?) Presumably at 75K they were not the original plugs, did you install the replacement spark plugs, have it done at the dealership, independent mechanic, etc?

They told me the sparkplugs should be oem since they don't need to be replace before 160 000km...

I didn't replace them but I can't tell if anyone ever replaced them since I have the car since a month only...

Thanks for sharing the recurent story!

Did they note any discoloration on the coil packs. Typically the spark plug loosens its way out a few threads before it rips the last threads out. Usually you should hear a loud ticking/tapping noise which matches rpm's when this happens - usually over the course of weeks. Your coil packs would be discolored dirty brown. You would also see a brown ring around the very base of the ceramic coming out of the base of the top of the plug. This would indicate the plug slowly worked its way out.

Good to hear. By chance did they mention that they had previously encountered this? Just curious whether Honda recognizes it to be a potentially recurring problem.

They told me they never seen this before, but who knows?!

They didn't mention about the coil pack color...

About the loud ticking, there was a ticking sound but mostly audible at idle, I went in Honda to get the winter tires on and they mentionned I should take an appointment to afjust the valves, that it would stop the ticking sound...

Was it a bad diagnostic?

The tire guy probably isn't a drive-train guy. I'm surprised he said anything about the noise.

It's a good to be aware of; if I hear pronounced ticking I won't delay looking at the plugs.

Wondering if all the Fits throwing plugs are 09s? These were part of a recall to replace lost motion springs in the valve train soon after production. The fix would have required adjusting the valves, the easiest way being to remove the plugs to eliminate compression allowing the pistons to be TDC for proper valve clearance measurement. I'm thinking sloppy torquing when replacing the plugs might be contributing to this.
