Iced windhield washers

Hi. I'm in Canada, and we've had days this year when it's dropping to -26C. I have a rated -40C washer fluid, but I'm finding that my washer lines are freezing up anyway.

Anyone else have this problem? I find the Fit defroster rather weak as well.

Mike

I'd say you got a weak batch of washer fluid.

Yeah both the heat and A/C are underpowered.

It does not take much additional water in the mix to rapidly raise the freezing point of the solvent stuff. If there was any water in the fluid container before you added th solvent then it got mixed in with the stuff you added. If it is a major issue to you, then pump out the stuff that is in there now and start over with a fresh batch of a different brand of windshield solvent. When you get the new stuff in, run the washer a coupe of cycles to flush out any old stuff still in the lines.

Most of the all season stuff is rated at -40 and it's total hogwash because those will instantly freeze up. Spend the extra 50 cents and buy some rain x or other name brand washer fluid with a de icer. The de icer will even melt of little pieces of ice on your windshield that could prevent your wipers working correctly.

Also, the de icer type fluid doesn't usually freeze on contact. It still can when windshield is extremely cold but you should use the defogger to heat up the windshield.

Good luck!

the super cheap walmart -20 washer has worked for me, even when air temps were -15 with a windchill of -35

Like stated above, the key is to have a 100% tank of the below zero stuff. having just a few ounces of water to one gallon can raise the freezing point to above zero

I had that problem at the beginning of the winter.
Bought my Fit in October and didn't think of what the previous owner had in the reservoir.
As the temp dropped the stuff that was in there turned to sludge.
Took awhile to even get it to flow with new stuff.

I use the -45 fluid from Costco. never froze or clogged, even in the -25C (-40C windchill)

windchill factor makes absolutely no difference.
