Do other People's car make this noise?
Engine on my 2011 1.2 Jazz (UK) is soo quite that I can hear a faint whirring noise when engine is idle. When I press the clutch in, the noise disappears.
Car runs absolutely fine, no gearbox/clutch issues that I can tell. Car has covered 30k miles.
I also have a 1st gen 03 1.4 Jazz with 90k OTC. I think, but not sure, that it makes the same noise, but the engine is alot louder so its hard to tell. Just wondering if anyone else has this?

Is that something to worry about? I've got about 1 month of Honda Warranty left. I've heard rumors of the initial thrust bearing or something like that being at fault, which could result in a gearbox rebuild? Or am I being stupid, lol.

Just got off the phone from Honda.
At first they said it was a clutch issue, and I'd be responsible for the cost of the stripping it, to find out whats going on. If it is premature failure, they would then cover the cost.
Thanks to you guys, I challenged him (not in a nasty way) and just said "Is it not more likely to be the gearbox then the clutch". He went off to ask someone and came back and said that I(you guys) were right. There going to diagnose it on Wednesday, and hopefully book it in for a fix later in the week.

Sorry to post again. I've done some reading up on these bearing issues, and all I can find are issues with the GD 1st Gen civics. I've also read that they fixed it in post 06 cars.
Do you think I have just been unlucky getting this problem in my 2011? Any other reported issues at all? I've searched on the forum, but can't find anything.

I took a video this evening of the noise with the clutch down and raised. You might need to torn your speakers up a bit to hear it, but its quite clear when I put the phone down by my left foot halfway through.
Any thoughts at all?

It needs to be replaced, as it will fail, unfortunately very hard to say when it will fail, and if it does it could damage the clutch and possibly more. I am 95% sure it is the thrust bearing.
Big Update for you all. Sorry about the length of this post, please bear with me, as I have lots of questions concerns 
So they looked at it and the report said - Internal gearbox fault - most noticeable in 1st gear. So in theory fixed under warranty.
However, a few things worry me....
My warranty runs out on 8/06 and they can't fit me in until 2/06 - should I be worried about this, or is a reported problem within warranty fixed even if the warranty date expires? Also, my daughter is due to be born on the 4/06, so there's a possibility I won't be able to make it.
I thought the power-train not covered with a 5 year warranty, not 3 year?
Also, we had to sign a waiver saying that if the fault is deemed to be fault of driver, we are liable for the cost. He did say that 99.9% of the time its covered under warranty though. Still terrifying though.
Unfortunately my wife took it in and picked it up, so couldn't ask those questions.
They will need car for 4 days, and will supply curtousey car with £1k insurance excess. They asked me to phone my insurance company to see if they will cover me to avoid them covering me. Is this normal?

You'll have to check your warranty booklet to see if the power train warranty is 5 years (it is here, but this differs by market).
I'd be nervous if the warranty is expiring before it's fixed. Ask to speak to the service manager. He should allay your fears and put it in writing if you wish.
The waiver if the fault is determined to be the driver's is troubling. Could be normal there, I don't know. Here the warranty states if the car was misused that repairs aren't covered (i.e. damaged by owner) so I guess it's the default. I don't see how they could claim a faulty first gear as abuse unless the gearbox has a hole in it from hitting something in the road (kidding, sort of).
Having your own insurance coverage for a loaner seems reasonable. Laws and customs differ. Here they might put you in a rental car and pay for it (depends on the dealer), but any excess insurance fees would be paid by the driver. A loaner isn't included in the factory warranty here so it would be up to the dealer.

Would I be correct in assuming that now the problem is diagnosed, I could (or get my local dealer to do it), phone around other Honda garages and see if they can fit me in earlier?
I'm guessing the waiver would be the same as the misuse clause. Hopefully it will all be ok. Suppose its only money at the end of the day and not worth getting too stressed out over - would be annoying though if they weren't going to cover it.
