loud throwout bearing?
loud throwout bearing?
Hey all. I have an 08 5spd and when I put the car in neutral and release the clutch. My throwout bearing seems kinda noisy. Not gritty, but a "whirring". Wondering if this is normal and they are just a bit noisy. Or if i have a problem... thanks
When your foot is OFF of the clutch pedal, there is very little pressure placed upon the throwout bearing, so more likely you have an input shaft bearing making noise (noise present whenever the input shaft is spinning), or maybe it's average (normal) gear noise as the shafts and gears and everything spin inside the trans.
Severity? Depends on how loud it is. All tend to make a little bit of noise....
Can you hear it whine or howl while driving?
Compare to another identical car?

Aaaah yes the input shaft my bad. Thats what I was reffering too. Cant hear any noise from it really while driving that i have noticed. Its just very noticable when the clutch is released at idle.

There's my video of my broken input shaft. I ended up changing it myself for 40$. 30$ for the bearing and seal and 10$ to rent a bearing puller. Also bought some permatex gasket maker.
My mechanic took the tranny out so I just had to crack the sucker open and change the bearing. Not for the faint of heart! It was supper fun though and inspired me to go back to school in mechanical engineering
good luck!
