How to use DRLs with HIDs

Hey everyone...first off...first post as a member! Everyone has great advice at this forum so I thought I could get some assistance on this topic.

I recently installed an HID kit. First, I purchased a LOW beam kit then after realizing my HIGH beams didn't work, I purchase a relay and had that setup. My question is that my DRLs do not run and I have the indicator light on. I read that I can pull the #15 fuse but I was wondering if there is any option to have my DRLs running while my HIDs are not being used during the day. Beggars can't be choosers but if there are any ways about it, or any information to have this option available, feedback would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again.

Correct me if I am wrong but your High Beams ARE your DRLs in GE8. They are on at a lower intensity when they are in DRL mode. When you replaced them with Low beam only HIDs, you removed them all together.

I run bi-xenon HIDs, so I pulled the DRL fuse. Although it would run DRLs as low voltage high beams as the halogen H4 setup, low voltage is not good for the HID ballast.

What I did was fabricate a ignition driven relay harness for my foglights, so my foglights turn on as I start my car each and every time.....works perfectly and I love the foglight on, no headlight look

1. So is this relay connected to a low voltage source to keep the fog lights dim as the DRL instead of the main lights?

2. is the relay a simple 12v ignition on relay that always has your fog lights on full power?

3. Did you change the DRL output bus to the fog lights?

Either way, I like your idea. What HID kit? I want one for my GK, but keep hearing about canbus problems.

Check out low-HID Hi-Halogen kits. Its a hid bulb with a smaller halogen bulb attached to it.

I have heard several mixed reviews saying the DTRL will work, and others saying it won't work.

Hi, a few months ago I posted about my home made DRLs. I also use bixenon HIDs so my OEM DRLs would not work. What I did was fabricate a "dummy" fuse to replace the #15 fuse. This "dummy" fuse uses power from the fuse box to power a relay which in turn powers the DRLs. The DRLs are LED and placed vertically beside the OEM fog lights.

I just used a simple automotive relay, its triggered by an ignition switched wire from the fuse box. Ran completely new wires, so i just unplugged the stock wires and I can go back to stock if I wanted to. Bought new H11 connectors from ebay for the harness, cheap from china lol

No canbus issues on the GE. I used the bi-xenon morimoto mini D2S 3.0 projectors, Osram CBI 5k bulbs, denso ballasts - great system, super bright.

One of my favorite mods for sure..........the whole project was a huge PITA though, if I had to do it again, I totally would get someone to do the headlights for me.

k-man,

So the DRL circuit is pulse width modulation. I decided with Sirius LED 3200 lumen bulbs with converter box and fans. The DRL circuit due to the PWM signal causes the high beam to strobe/flicker

Looking for a way to make the high beam LED work with the DRL circuit, or to move the DRL circuit output to the foglights or auxillary DRl lights I can install

Thoughts?

Use a capacitor to control a relay. The capacitor keeps the voltage above the threshold of the relay... and then the relay simply stays on. I forget where I read this.

Agreed on the relay for HID installs. Check out my other thread for more info on the DRL mod. Its a bit more complex than I originally thought...
