Cracked dash and button rubbing off
Cracked dash and button rubbing off
Hey everyone having a few issues with my dash board and the buttons on the radio and on the steering wheel for radio and cruise control. The volume button the center "push" text and black coating has all rubbed off. About a month ago I just ended up rubbing the rest of it off so it was just solid white.
My dash piece around the radio/head unit actually seems cracked. The crack has gotten larger since I first noticed it about a year ago.
At first and I still kinda believe this might be the case but I use to use Meguiars supreme shine to clean the interior but I have since switched to the Meguiars natural shine. I usually clean my car once a week inside and out and have watched it slowly get worse and worse. I believe it has stopped since switching to the natural shine.
Anyone else have any similar experiences? Kinda disappointing really...

Mine is fine and not a single sign of wear, of course I only dust it off with a soft towel.
Do you really want the board to shine? Also, what happened with the crack? Unless that area is under natural stress (which I doubt it is), it seems like an area of an impact of some sort.
Maybe you could order those covers from the internet and be careful next time. Chemicals are not recommended as cleaning of interior plastics usually.
The dash has never had any impact.
I believe that came from the chemicals as well. I usually would spray 7-10 times of the Meguiars on a microfiber wipe down the dash then use a clean microfiber to go over the area a second time. I really try not to use to much Meguiars and I hate when you spray it on the dash because the overspray always seems to get on the windshield and that sucks to wipe down... This is my usual routine

Yeah you don't really ever want to put any chemicals on your dash. Thinking about it you are putting oils on plastic and your car sits in the hot sun all day baking. So it begins to deteriorate the dash.
Best bet is just water and a clean rag. Recently found out (Wais) tire shine also isn't good to use.

Plastic, being an oil-based product, is understandably going to have some kind of interaction with different kinds of oils and the additives in them. I've never done more than wipe my dash with a dry microfiber cloth (but not the gauge lenses). I'd strongly suggest not using any product at all, unless it's just a water dampened cloth.
The good thing is the crack near the radio is actually the radio, so if you change out the radio this whole piece will be replaced.

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do about your radio cover but you can always buy a Double Din radio and get a new dash kit or try to buy a used radio off of someone else.
Your cruise controls can be replaced but I think you will need to remove the steering wheel to access them.
I always use a very small amount of a water based satin finish dressing like this one:

I actually use this stuff lightly sprayed on a tire sponge
