Help with trouble code p0172

Hey guys. I'm about to buy a fit for a great price with the knowledge that it has a p0172 trouble code. It's a 2009 with 142000 miles and is in otherwise great shape.

So the car is running rich and I'm wondering what you all have done to fix this.

All I have done so far is clean the MAF sensor.

I am thinking about testing the o2 sensors with a multimeter, but it seems to me that if a sensor is faulty wouldn't there be a code specifically for that? Unless it was working but not optimally.

I have read the steps that need to be taken to diagnose p0172, but of course it's very time intensive and I don't have a proper scan tool.

Any suggestions appreciated! Ready to get the mpg back up to where it should be.

My suggestion is... Don't buy it.

You situation is similar to another owner... And basically, I think you'll need to take it ta mechanic for, at minimum a diagnostics check... Potentially an overhaul.

Wow an overhaul? What for?

I cleaned the MAF and the light went off and has stayed off for a few days, but we'll see.

If its just the MAF, then, you're good to go... but if the car continues to dump fuel... then you'll need the engine diagnosed.

The other forum member's Fit is using a LOT of extra fuel. And one possibility with it over 170k miles on it, is that there's excessive build up in the engine that will need to get cleaned out (requires opening the engine). Of course, its just a possibility right now (and if it were the case, is the cost justifiable?). Nonetheless, that member needs to take their Fit to a mechanic to actually figure out what's wrong.

Oh, yeah. This car was reporting a rich condition, but the mpg was still around 34. After cleaning the MAF and resetting the mpg-ometer, I am still looking at 34 mpg. I need to check the tire pressure as well.

I'm actually quite shocked to have the engine light go off from cleaning the MAF. In my experience, it's never been the small thing! It didn't look dirty at all, but there was some dirt and dust in the intake box and air filter that I cleared out as well.
