Outer tie rod boot torn....after 3k miles, advice?

Outer tie rod boot torn....after 3k miles, advice?
So I noticed some play in both oem tie rods so I replaced them before moving from NJ to GA.
Today I rotated tires to find the boots on the new ones are busted!
How could that have happened? Is there a spec for tightening and I over did it? There is no play in the new ones so can I drive on these for awhile then replace?
Replacing them wasn't hard just that I don't have access to a free driveway and random tools as I did in nj.
