Question How hard is changing a front wheel bearing?

I'm looking over the manual and there seems to be number of specialty tools involved. Is this a task I can do with my press and a little ingenuity/fabrication?

Any suggestions on how to make it go easier?

Any suggestions on where to get the part? My local dealer wants $120....for a bearing.

Thanks for your help -J

From what I understand you need a press to remove the bearing. Without access it might be best to have a shop do it. I have also read that the studs can be weak and if you are planning to run spacers or adapters this might be a good time to add a cheap job on an expensive one.

I have a press already. I'm just wondering if that's the only 'speciality tool' I need or if there are any other gotchas that I need to worry about.

Thanks for your help

I don't know if it's relevant, but I watched a mechanic take out my front bearing from my 2003 Mazda Protege5. He had to torch the assembly and subsequently press it out in order to remove it. The heat allows the parts to expand and allow more "wiggle" room to remove the bearing. I would bet this could be true of our bearings, too. It depends on how stuck this bearing is.
Is your press meant for this job or is it a general machine shop press?
When in doubt, I always go to a mechanic, this 1-2 hr job could easily turn into a 1-2 day job.

Ball joint separator, axle socket, impact gun, torque wrench that goes up to 200lb and a press is all the special stuff you need
