Ignition switch will not turn

I have a 2009 manual transmission. . Yesterday the key had some resistance going into the ignition switch and when inserted fully would not turn. I sprayed with WD-40 and Graphite. This made the key easier to insert but still did not allow for the switch to turn. I turned the steering wheel between the two stops and tried for 2 hours to get it to turn. I tried my usual key and my unused spare, with the same results. I finally got it to turn once and drove it to my mechanic. He called this morning and said I would have to take it to a dealer. The ignition switch is defective. He got it to turn once but that was it. Might be $$$.

I did a search and saw a few people with this problem but not many. How common is a defective ignition switch for 09s, and do I have any leverage with the dealer. Warranty is expired.

Thanks for your feedback

Had a similar issue, had to get the ignition cylinder fixed (dealer called in a locksmith) and I got a new key made as the old one was worn and probably caused the issue in the first place.

Had something similar happen to my gd last year. The dealer wanted around $500 for a replacement switch assembly. They wouldn't sell just the tumbler and column lock which is all I needed. Ended up buying a column from a wreaker for $100 swapped in my tumblers so I retained my stock key and bolted all of my electronics to the new part.
