Sleeping in the Fit.
Sleeping in the Fit.
I refuse to pay for a motel on road trips to just sleep. Not when I have a perfectly good "tent" on wheels. In the event I need a shower on longer road trips, all the truck stop showers I've used have been excellent.
I did a small road trip from BR Louisiana to Dallas TX. I drove there, found a suitable stealthy hiding spot to park (a Walmart parking lot, as usual by the garden center).
I had seen a post on here, can't find it now, a poster used a folding cot to even out the discrepancies in surface by laying back passenger front seat and stretching cot over the passenger side. Voila! Worked like a charm. I drove a Honda Odyssey for years, and "camped" in it many times. My trick to car camping is to use a dark blanket to cover up with. You blend into the darkness.
For my next camping outing, I will make curtains for sides (hang from handgrips) and use a sunscreen for front windshield to block out light. The WM where I stayed had the brightest lights of any parking lot ever.
I am 5'5". I could see where this could work for someone taller as well. I don't know if you could sleep two people in the car. (I don't think so)
I was able to pull into parking lot, unfold cot, put it in position, cover up, get a good night's sleep WITHOUT opening any doors. A suitable vessel for bathroom calls might be handy for some.
The storage bin in the very right rear of the Fit became my "nightstand". Perfect place for Phone to be secure. I hung my glasses in the lock notch of the seat belt which was right over my head.
Would not have thought of this on my own, so thanks to the person who originally posted this. Big money saver on trips to not have to buy motel rooms. I am a foodie, so I had my own food prepared and so spent no $$ on junk food. The only thing I bought was coffee the next morning.
Happy Fit camping!!

I made a mattress out of some foam strips, curtains, and a shelf on the trunk cover ledge - curtains are made from an old fitted sheet with velcro to secure the corners. With the front seats pushed forwards as far as they go, this was a perfectly comfy bed for two (albeit both under 5'6").
