-2500km passed oil change due indicator

Just got a 2010 honda fit sport from a toyota dealer for a good deal, except oil life is at -2500. Shouldn't be an issue for a honda right? Thought it would be just -2500km passed the 5000km interval but after more research I found out that the oil due light doesn't just count down from 5k kms.

Oil change indicator is based on a lot of things and definitely is more than 5000 km between changes. There is also a code, like A1, with that indicator for other things to do. Find that code and look in your owners manual. It will tell you what is scheduled to be done. Change the oil, do the other stuff, and reset the indicator. The procedure to reset it is also in your manual.

Did the seller change the engine oil? (pull dipstick and see what color the oil is) If it looks fresh and clean, reset the reminder and drive it.

Sometimes the kids changing oil can't figure out how to reset the reminder so they just let it go. Other times it's just forgotten.
The Toyota people probably know how to reset the reminders on Toyotas but care little about figuring out anyone elses.

Thanks for the great info all. I just did an oil change just to be safe, looked pretty dark to me. Also looks like I have to do a valve adjustment and coolant flush soon.

Always safe to do the oil change on a used car. On one hand, it's easy to say that a tech at one dealer won't know or care how to reset every other brand's minder. On the other hand, it's easier to say that the sales department at one brand won't want to pay for synthetic in another brand's car when it's still showing a lot of life left.

At least now you know for sure where it stands, that's worth a lot. Welcome to the forum, and enjoy the car!
