Well, to make a long story short, I only had one key for my 2010 Honda Fit Sport and I lost it. A nearby dealer said the only way to get a new key made was to have the car towed to the dealership. I'd obviously like to avoid having to tow my car there. Is there any possible way to have a key made without having my car towed?

A key can be cut but the car needs to be towed so it can be programmed and actually be functional.

dont know if this helps - but some of the home-depot or osh type hardware stores can (and do) program and cut keys... i got a spare one made at osh a year ago, but it DID require a couple of trips by the cutter-dude out to the car to program it... thus, if you are within (or closer) to a hardware store that does the job - you might save some towing-costs... (and the key, itself, was a bit cheaper as well, iirc)

I actually did find a traveling locksmith that would do the job but he paid so much for the remote keys (and had to pass the cost down to me) that it made sense to just get it towed to the dealership for free via my insurance company and have keys made more cheaply at the dealer. I did find out however that you can have keys cut and programmed without going into the dealer, just that they might be even more expensive than going to a dealership itself. Maybe he just pays more than he should. It is a pretty decent locksmith, so I'm not sure what is going on.

 

dont quote me, but i think the costs were something like $250 at dealer and $175 at osh - in my case... either way it was an astonishing amount for just a key (and programming)...

glad you got it sorted - and like one person up-above mentioned - the dealer (in theory) can just look-up your exact details and cut/program the key directly - assuming you havent/hadnt changed the code since purchase-new... whatever - again, glad you got it sorted... h.

 

A mobile locksmith can set you up. AAA or CAA will reimburse at least part of it.
