Blower motor replace

Blower motor replace
So, the heater blower motor in my 2011 failed last week in just a couple of days. Dreading replacing it, I looked here. Now, experience with blower motors in the past led me to believe this was going to be a nearly impossible task for an owner to perform and a REALLY expensive repair for parts and labor.
This forum showed me otherwise. I did a search and came up with a link to a service bulletin that shoed how easy and fast it was to R&R the blower motor. Did some searching on the net for the part and found it as low as $38.00, but naturally have to wait for it. It was still cheaper than the north of $150.00 Honda wants for the part.
Sooooo....I called around some local auto junk yards I know and found a yard that had the part and I could get it TODAY for $50.00. I figured an OEM part is better than cheap Chinese knock-off any day of the week so I show up at the yard and the part has been tested but the squirrel cage was cracked. I offer him $20.00 for it and take it home, swap out the squirrel cages and I'm blowing air again for $20.00 and about ten minutes total of work,
Win, win, win.

Wow ! that is great...
Yeah, for the amount of time it took to slap in it.... I too would consider just getting one out of the salvage yard....
I have to ask, what were the first signs of a failing blower motor?
Mine, has a rattle in it on the first couple of speeds....
Thanks, Just

Hi Justus,
Yeah, mine rattled a little on the first couple of speeds too for a really long time. As long as I can remember. Last week, I noticed that the fan didn't come on at all so I gave it a maintenance hit with my palm under the passenger side dash in the area and it cam e on. This happened several times over the next few days with the fan running slower and slower after I hit it. Sometimes it would speed up to normal speed as it ran. Over the next two days it ran slower and slower till it was barely running at all on high speed setting. Also, smelled really bad when I would get back into the car after letting it sit like something died in there. Yuck.

There is a TSB about the blower motors. They have been using motors with crap bearings. After awhile they gradually start to seize and draw too many amps. This will usually blow the resistance element so that you have only high speed. I used the TSB as leverage with the dealer to get 50% off on replacing the motor and resistance element ($200 instead of $400).
